Oldsmobile 88-Steering Fluid/Transmission Fluid

I just took in my '97 Oldsmobile (60K) for a oil change and they said that both sets of fluid were too dark.  The cost of flushing/changing was almost half of what the car is worth.  SO, here's what i would like to know. a)  Can I do either one of these by myself? b)  Do i need a lift? c)  I know the steering fluid just affect performance but do i run a chance of killing the car by not changing the trans. fluid?
THANKS! JM

Just need a set of ramp, 2 wheel chock to lock the back wheel ,you could do trans.fluid and filter easy
enough just notice how you take it apart and reverse the process to put it back

Transmission fluid

When I changed the transmission oil on my 88 Buick lesabre limited I took 6 qts of Dextron VI, and it is also wise to change the transmission filter. U can purchase the transmission filter kit from any auto parts store, not neccessarily the dealer. This is the best change for the vehicle.

2002 Oldsmobile Alero makes loud noises when turning

more than likely it is just low on power steering fluid. system might have air in it now. so after fill power steering unit to proper level driver the car and check fluid level again. and add more if needed . I believe car should have motor running for when checking fluid, same as transmission.

How do I know how much fluid to add?

which fluid?
the transmission holds just over 13 quarts, you need 7.4 quarts if you drop pan and change filter
oil change with filter is 4.5 quarts 10W 30.

I can't find the well for the Automatic Transmission Fluid. I see the cap for engine oil, brake fluid and steering fluid but no transmission fluid. Please help!!!

You must locate the transmission dip stick. Look towards the rear near the firewall. It looks like the oil dipstick but larger. You fill up or add transmission fluid through the transmission dipstick hole.
Good luck and thanks for your question and I hope my suggestions help. burdfrenzy

1988 oldsmobile delta 88 won't drive forward

This is probably the transmission. Check the transmission fluid level to make sure it is at the appropriate level. If not add transmission fluid to reach the appropriate level. If this does not work then the gears may be burnt out in the transmission.

Car wont move when in gear

Check the transmission fluid first to make sure there is enough in the transmission and it is not leaking out. Look at the fluid on the dipstick and smell it. If the fluid is not red in color or smells burned the low/reverse clutch pack in the transmission could be worn out. Wipe the fluid off of the dipstick onto a clean white rag, if you see a grey looking stain on the rag there may be metal particles in the fluid possibly indicating a failed planetary/sun gear set in the transmission. . .good luck.
