I have a leak of oil coming from between the engine and the gearbox.would it be the seal?how big a job is it to fix?i have a jeep cherokee sport 1998 2.5td,might you have any adive
Try using high mileage oil and lucas additive...If leak is not too bad, that may soften and swell seal enough to stop it. To do seal correctly engine must come out. Try it...It may help!!!

Presuming you are talking about an oil leak from behind a pulley? All shafts as they exit the engine, have an oil seal fitted in the case and supply a tight seal to the shaft, if oil is leaking the seal is worn and needs replacing. depending on what the pulley is driving (cam belt), it could be a big job.
Check the rear main seal, if its coming out between engine and transmission it is time to replace. Usually this seal wont stop leaking even with seal conditioner. Depending on engine and chassis either the trans or motor will have to come out in order to replace the seal. If the seal is external than remove the trans, if a 1 piece internal than engine has to come out. Any way you look at it is a time consuming and big job.
fine out were the leak is???? if its leaking out a drive shaft there are oil seals on them that can be changed from the out side if its coming out the frount gearbox oil seal it will be running out the bell housing,,, big job to fix,,,thats a gearbox out job?
sorry but its going to be a big job. you need to remove the gearbox to open up and get to the seals. you could try and use an additive in the gear box, its like oil seal for engine you can get it for engines gear boxes and difs and power steering. it sometimes goes by seek and seal, in older vehicles its quite good. you will need to replace the oil it will need to be done twice to clean it all out so it can get a good seal.. i.e change oil run engine get the gearbox to move for 20 min then change the oil as its warm not hot so let it cool down for 10-20 min then drain. put the seek and seal in and top up with oil and run as normal, check after a few days to see if its worked. usual does.
wsell the best bet is to find the leak first then buy a bible haynes and chilton both make a great bible for your car
once you wash the front of the motor off it will be evadent to weather you are ready to tackel the job
just take betsy to the car wash open the heed and leave her running now pump in some quarters and soak the girl clean all the **** and dont be afraid
rear end oil seal ,a common fault but its expensive to repair although the seal only costs coppers as the gearbox has to come completely out and this will involve dropping the sub frame as well.no short cuts here ,iam afraid ,how bad is the leak ??try some autobox laek sealer additive and put it in the engine oil.also if and when you have it repaired check for a ball bearing blancking plug in end of oil gallery its a possibility ??seen it before .whats the mileage of this vehicle as it sounds like a high mileage reps cars
hi from uk if your oil ? leak is from rear of engine area ? but you say oil level in engine is ok? and not needed to top up ? then i would check the gearbox/transmission oil level? for any loss? asap it may be your leak is coming from g/box/transmission front seal ? but either way gearbox will have to come out do be able to replace both rear engine crank seal and g/box front seal at the same time ? hope this helps you don;t delay in topping oil level in trans ?
