I have a 1975 Dodge powered class A Command or motorhome with a 440 HD motor. When I 1st got it after putting in fresh gas ( it had been setting over 3 years) it ran fine little smoke from both pipes replaced alternator and batteries but now only 2 cylinder's have commpresstion in them. Any ideas on what might be the issue?

No compression means engine needs new piston rings and/or new valves. Find a trusted mechanic to give a estimate on cost as it's not a do it yourself project unless you know what you're doing.

Is the heaps of white smoke come out of the tail pipe LONG AFTER the 15 minutes period?
To pin point a blowing headgasket you will need
1)coolant system compression tester
2)chemical reaction test for combustion test gas
If it's the org. engine from 1998,with over 120,000 then blown headgasket is a good possiblity.
Tow it to the shop and let the pro to do the coolant pressure test and combustion gas test.
A full head gasket job with head re-surface (if it can be re-use) is worth it.
Shop around on well estiblished independent shops.

I had same problem in varius trucks and motorhomes with the same engine size (460)and this is caused by excesive heat from the engine in all 460's,when hot if I stoped at a gas station to fill,once I tryed to start it again it felt like the battery was almost dead and bearly turned the engine over.what I did was that I added an after market engine oil cooler and that fixed the problem.

V-belt routing for a Chev 454 (7.5l) engine

This is the routing diagram for a 454 engine using v-belts only, not a serpentine belt.
The following abbreviations are used :
  • C - Crankshaft
  • S - Smog pump (A.I.R.) system
  • W/P - Water Pump
  • Alt - Alternator / Generator
  • A/C - Airconditioner
  • P/S - Power steering(In some installations also includes the brake booster pump)
This particular setup is most prevalent in motorhomes. Refer to the diagram.
Diagram 1 is for the first groove on the crank(closest to the block), and utilizes the 1st groove on the power steering.(belt no : 15415)
Diagram 2 is for the 2nd crank groove and utilises the 1st groove on the water pump pulley, the A/C pulley and the 2nd groove on the P/S pulley.(belt no 15590)
Diagram 3 is for the 3rd groove on the crank
If your motorhome uses a serpentine belt it replaces the belt in track number 3. (serpentine belt no : 6K560)
The upper smog pump(not shown in diagrams) is powered from the powersteering (Hydraboost) pulley (V-belt no : 15450)

Dodge 440 motorhome parked now won't start crank over. Battery is fully charged changed ballast res. Tested coil.Changed ecuand voltage regulator. Repaired damaged wires, cleaned conn. Any ideas?

if you're getting all those things then there can only be one problem left, in order for it to start it has to get gas, so my guess is the gas pump is not working. btw are you getting the check engine light? if so then check the gas pump.

What is the difference between regular car 440 and the440 in motorhome with the type 3. My email is thanks

the 440 in the motor home usually has more torque than horsepower since it had to carry that much more weight

I have a 1978 dodge 440 in a motorhome and the engine turns over but as soon as I let off the starter it dies. It seems like its not getting power to the engine?

It could be many things so start with the easiest /cheaper first.Check your plugs , they will tell allot...white= too lean .black and/or wet =too rich .. clean and gap If your coil is old and not sparking hot enough it will sputter and stall . If your ground to the ignition is loose or corroded , same result. If the motor has noit been run for a long time ; replace spoark plug wires , coil , pioints, rotor , cap ( just replace the distributor with electronic etc.) . Put in fresh fuel (gas goes bad) and filter.You might run some carb cleaner or rebuild the carb , your start /idle jets might be plugged.Check all vacume conections , cracked or loose hose equals too lean to run when cold. If all else fails loosen the distributor and swivel small increments back and forth until it lights. Oh yeah , if your alternator is not putting out the motor will kinda start then die beause the battery cannot keep up.

73 was an awful year for smog devices.
You could just look at any 1973 Dodge diagram, because a motorhome is no different.
But my advice is to take all smog stuff off. It did not work well in 73, and harms engine. You don't have to test anyway.
