Question about 1994 Geo Prizm

1 Answer

1994 Geo Metro won't accelerate past 1/2 way through each gear. When it gets half way through first gear, the car bogs down and won't accelerate further. Shifting into second, it lugs until half way through that gear, bogs down and stops accelerating. Each successive gear does the same thing. I had this problem 3 years ago. When it happened, I would shut the car down and restart it and it would be fine. One day, at a stop light, it just quit. Mechanic replaced the fuel pump. It ran fine for about 400 miles and started again. Not shutting it off and restarting it doesn't solve the problem. It's doing it all the time now.

I would pay more attention to the air flow sensor and mass air flow sensor, putting this on a diagnostic machine will pinpoint the errors stored on the onboard computer. both sensors can be cleaned by a competent mechanic, most mechanics don't want to, they prefer just to swap items out these days because of costs. get a reading, then you will know for sure. good luck.

SOURCE: 1992 geo metro cranks but does not start. Will

You might want to see if the timing belt might have jumped. If you getting gas and spark it should of fired.Try this Hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank on it for a few.By doing this you shut off fuel flow to motor and it tries to burn what has been injected.Don't let off of the pedal or make sure to press down before cranking.Maybe it flooded it self by cranking slow..If car still does not start after cranking the motor over a few times spay some starting fluid into the intake or throttle body and try to start. If fires and misses back fires has a slow pedal response its more than likely the timing belt....

SOURCE: 92 tracker is losing power

squawk: started to miss and bog down

is this a 8v or 16v.? the cmp is not noted for failure, rare.

your failure to get the CEL DTC codes is bad.
you must NEVER ignore DTCs'

pre 96's the light comes on and it means gross sensor fail.

(reset the ses mileage switch on federal versions of car )
ses comes on 50k and 80k repeat and not found on any Calif car.

place the jumper (paper clip ) and stop guessing.
get that code.

if car dont restart , you can keep DLC jumper installed and it will tell you what failed.

the ECU will tell you what failed, just listen to it.
how ever if no CEL , that dont mean all is well.

this is a hard problem.
post here if real hard. get top help.

SOURCE: My 1990 Geo Metro will not accelerate. It idles

The problem I've had with metro's is the pre-cat located in the exhaust manifold itself. If you don't live in California, you don't even need this piece of junk. It overheats the heads and makes it crack, or makes the head gasket leak. Removal is rather easy though. Remove the exhaust manifold and chip that baby out, use a shop vac to remove the pieces. If your model don't have one, it will usually be the one on the exhaust pipe itself. But you already replaced that. Try a short test run with the manifold disconnected and see if acceleration improves to rule this out as a potential problem. Also check your TPS, (Throttle Posotion Switch) with an ohm meter to be sure it hasnt developed any dead spots. Yet another source of trouble seems to be a stuck EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculator) valve. This will allow too much exhaust to enter your fresh fuel air mixture, decreasing detonation, and slowing acceleration.

SOURCE: Geo Metro 1994, diagnose no fuel presure problem.

Quite a few things can cause a car to die after idling for awhile, but if you have verified that the fuel pressure is actually dropping when the motor dies, the likely culprits are:
1) Electric fuel pump in the gas tank is bad
2) The fuel pressure regulator (on the throttle body) is bad
3) An electrical problem in the power to the fuel pump (like a bad fuel pump relay or lose ground wire to the relay's circuit)

I have a 2000 metro the trans shifts hard when you first start up from 2nd to 3rd. But after that it seams not to shift down from 3rd no matter how many times you spot and go again.

Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST.
Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check TPS for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS.
Thank you for using fixya and keep us posted.

94 geo metro won't start. possibly fuel problem. has trouble when i hit gas to make up a hill and misses, no transmission or spark plug problems. HELP!

Do a complete tune up plugs wires cap rotor. The spark gets stronger when your accelerating and this is when some electrical problems break down.

Swapped motor in '94 metro 4 cyl.

Check the mass airflow sensor and the throttle position sensor - either of those would cause similar problems if they're reading incorrectly.
