Question about 2001 Kia Rio

2 Answers

2001 Kia Rio with brand new battery and alternator will start sometimes or with a jump but then shuts off. Jump it and it may run for a few minutes and quit again or work for days then just quit. Girlfriend was driving down the highway and had lights, and gauges start blinking and car shut off. Shut car off today and could hear a clicking noise in relay/fuse box. Any ideas?

The symptoms you describe sound familiar. Something is killing your new battery and the problem may indicate a need for consulting a competent Kia dealer. The erratic instrumentation is due to low voltage on the bus that feeds it. That, along with the clicking noise, are signs of a dying battery. The dealer may have a factory service bulletin (FSB) that fixes this.

Sounds like you have a bad connection at the battery, wiggle the terminals they are very thin on that car. Check all your major grounds under the hood. All of that assuming the battery is in good condition

Check the fuel system. Cheap first....fuel filter. Then the fuel pump. The engine does actually turn over, but it just won't start...correct?

The battery is only use to start the car, once the car is moving the alternator takes over and charges the battery. I sounds like the alternator is bad. You take the alternator to Napa, Auto Zone or Advance auto part and have them check it for you.

You have already figured it out but don't know the answer <(^_^)> . It's the alternator.

It is possible that if your old alternator was shorted out, it could have caused the main fuse to blow. The fuse is located in the engine compartment fuse box. It is an 80 Amp fuse and sits off to the right - all by itself. (See picture)

NOTE: There is also a chance that there is something else wrong that may have caused this fuse to blow. If it blows again upon replacing it, you need to inspect the wire that runs between this fuse and the alternator - it may be shorted to ground. If this is the case, you probably did not need to replace your alternator.

There is a large maxi-fuse between the battery and alternator. Its at least 100 amp or more. It may be in the cable at the battery, or in one of the fuse boxes.
You may also have damaged the key switch or the brake circuit.
You may have to get a book to get the wiring diagrams to check everything involved.

well it sounds like the alternator is not charging properly. car off at battery there should be at least 12.6 volts. jump start car, when running if alternator is good battery voltage should be 14.2 to 14.6 good-day !!

If the car can be jump started and then runs fine once it is started then the problem is your battery. Once the alternator is being driven by the engine, that is producing the power needed to run the car and then you have no problems from what you have described.

You will find that the battery is virtually dead or faulty and needs to be replaced. It clearly does not have sufficient power to turn the starter motor and crank the engine over.

If the problem was not with the battery then you would not be able to start the car by hooking up power from another vehicle.

The battery is the only power source in your car to turn the electric starter motor to start the engine.

Make sure you clean up the ends of the cables before you install a new battery to ensure good contact with the battery terminals. Do not install a cheap battery because it will probably not last more than a couple of years. A very good battery when properly maintained will last 3-4 years - sometimes more.

I would still have the alternator checked to ensure it is producing sufficient power. If it is not, power will be drawn from the battery when the car is running and the battery will discharge. I do not think there is a problem with the alternator from what you have said.

The car has no power after i found a ground wire

You will need to reconnect the earth wire and check the battery earth connection to the car body, most likely if the car has been arched out then you will have blown a relay, or fuse. does the car try to turn over or are you getting nothing?

If nothing then you need to check all wires from the battery, ensure none have melted to each other.

the putt sound is either lack of or to much air, so check the air pipes for leaks, rips etc.

get back to me after you have looked at these and I will give you a few alternatives.

Regards
Dan
