Hi i have a ls400 it will turn over but wont start. it might not be getting spark to the spark plugs. i checked 3 of 8 of them and they are NOT getting spark. ive had the car for a week but was running strong and starting every time. any ideas of why it isnt getting spark to the spark plugs?

You don't say what year you have so I'm not sure if you have the older version with dual distributors, up until 1997 or 1998 above with coil on plug. If you have a 1998+ , there is no chance that all 8 coils failed so I would look elsewhere. In my professional opinion, I would focus on the crank sensor. If the ECM is not getting the crank signal, it doesn't know where the #1 cylinder is so it will not fire.

    sorry i have a 91 ls400 so yes it does gave duel distributors... i used a test light and the coil pack is getting power to both ends... i also used it for the distributor but didnt get any power. so i tried the spark plug wires nd i got power but not alot.. i figure its the spark plug wires or the distributor.

SOURCE: I HAVE A 1996 INTREPID.

Maybe check the flex plate. I had a 94 concorde with a similar problem. Scanner said it was the cam and crank sensors. The flex plate can get a crack around the bolt pattern which allows it to shimmy when running. throwing off the cam and crank somehow as the mechanic tried to explain to me.

You most likely have no injector pulse,this is caused by a bad cam sensor,or pick up coil,or crankshaft sensor.

crankshaft sensor, or computer on toyotas then it was usually the distributor or the computer, but the crankshaft sensor might be bad too thats what helps to get you spark.

check for spark by putting a screw driver in a plug lead and wind it over,a spark should jump to earth if you hold it close to the motor.Check that it has plenty of fuel pressure.

Car wont start due to ignition Coils wont give spark (sometimes)


Okay, I am not convinced it is the spark. But there is a chance. The fact that torching the plugs allowed it to start tells me you engine is flooding. Do you smell gas? If you open the throttle body with the air cleaner off, does vapor come out when the engine had recently cranked? If it is electrical, then power to both ignition modules is failing, which means A. the ECM is not providing power to the modules, or B. The engine crank sensor has failed. The Cause could be a bad connection to the ECM.
A scope will indicate whether or not the proper pulses are being input and output from the ECM to the modules. Of course it will need to be tested when it is not working compared to when it is. When cranking, the tach should move indicating rotation of the crank, if not, there is a good chance the crank sensor is no good.

If the spark is getting right.Get the fuel system checked.Its quite possible that fuel pressure is low or fuel pump not starting up right.

Just did a tune up on my ls400 but still will not crank i know it a igition problem what else could it be besides spark plug and wires


Thanks for the clarification. Engine needs 3 things to run. Compression , fuel , spark.
It's turning over so you have compression.
Check a couple of spark plug wires for spark.
If you got spark , most likely no fuel.

Was it running before the "tune up" ?

Wont start


Hi,
You can pull a plug wire end from a plug and either put a spare plug in the end, or remove one of your plugs from the engine. Just lay the plug onto the engine... don't hold it... ha
Have someone turn the engine over and observe for spark at the end of the plug.
This will at least determine if you're getting spark. Good luck!

ok, i tell you 3 possible causes.
check maf sensor connection , check fuel pressure regulator (max press fuel in rail 40 psi) , check engine compression (min 95 psi ) if less this cause spark plugs wet and not start

My 91 geo wont start it turns over but dosnt catch to acctually start, it will start once in a while but if i turn it off it wont start again. were thinking it is the coil.


The coil can be checked by measuring the resistance between the primary terminals, should be 1.33-1.55 ohms. Also check the resistance between the positive primary terminal and the high tension lead, should be 10.7-14.5 k ohms. Hold the spark plug wire (I usually use an old plug inserted into the bood). about 1/4 to 3/8 inch away from the block while cranking and see what kind of spark you get. If you get a good spark, look for something else. jeb

Have you checked if it has spark ? Check the spark by removing a sprk plug and connect it to the wire. Place the spark plug agains a groung. Then have somebody crank the engine. It should have spark.
