If you have a 1.5l it's in the distributor, 1.8 it's on the cylinde head on the right, below the valve cover

SOURCE: camshaft position censor 98 rav4

One item to think about:

You must clear the code with an OBD tester or the light will not extinguish...even with the issue fixed.

The is much info on the cam position sensor on the Rav4 forums including pictures and discussions.

SOURCE: talked several days ago about

Front part of the engine, above the front exhaust manifold to the right. Its usually black/grey sensor with an eletrical connector running from the RH side of the engine. By the way the cam sensor controls spark, the crank sensor controls fuel pulse. hopefully this helps

I am trying to find the location for my crankshaft position sensor on my 1999 Mitsubishi Diamante

Your 1999 Mitsubishi Diamante is a 3.5L MFI SOHC 6cyl engine.
MFI = multi-port fuel injection
SOHC = single overhead camshaft
This answer covers Mitsubishi Diamante1.8L, 2.4L, 3.0L (SOHC and DOHC), 3.5L, and 1997-2000 1.5L Engines.

2.4L engine shown, others similar.

In Fig. 1, the two arrows point to the CKP (crankshaft position sensor) mounting bolts to remove. 2.4L engine shown.

Remove the sensor and slide the reluctor wheel off of the crankshaft-2.4L engine shown.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the timing belt.
3. Unplug the sensor connector.
4. Unfasten the two retaining bolts, then remove the CKP sensor from the vehicle.
5. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

I have a 95 Mitsubishi mirage. The check engine light keeps coming on and when I hook up the code reader it tells me that the code po340 which is the camshaft position sensor. My book says its in the...

I would check your wires make sure, its more common than not, but it could also be the engine control module as well. and unless the distributor was new could also be a bad module inside the distributor.

Dont know how to install the timing belt

the timing marks are located on your camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. As for installation I recommend a repair manual. Your local library might have one or your local auto parts store.
