The board that the light bulbs plug into may have gone bad. Common problem on late 90's GM vehicles. Should look something like thisBrake lights on a 1997 Pontiac Transport stopped - 4ca39227-e4e8-490c-ad1c-dac399f37520.jpg

The ground wire in the trunk area, coming from the brake light harness, might have come off or really loose. Hope this will get your lights working again. Best wishes.

The brake lights are routed through the signal light switch.
Looks like that will be the next switch to replace and the problem.

1997 olds cutless brake lights will not work. bulbs, fuse and switch are good

Its a faulty turn signal switch.Try this, push down and hold brake pedal while pushing on the hazard switch and if the brake lights come on then replace the signal switch.

there are several causes, check bulbs first. A crossed filament in a bulb can cause similar problems. The brake & turn use the same filament so if the brake lights are on, due to a bad switch underdash, the turn signals won't work.

If the two rear brake light are working on each side, then fuse and relay are good, check the bulb.

1997 monte carlo. 3rd brake light works, but tail lamp brake lights do not.

The 3rd brake light working does reveal that the fuse is good, and the brake switch is good. Check the bulbs, sockets, and the wiring between the brake lights

2002 Montana, both brake lights stopped working but the light bar on the hatch is still good. Any suggestions

The working light bar reveals that the brake switch is working, and the fuse is good. Check the bulbs, they are probably burned out. If not the bulbs, then the wire that goes from one side to the other may have failed.

ljones, Did you check the "VEH stop" fuse in the left side instrument panel fuse box. There are 3 stop light fuses, 1 for all the stop lights located in the under hood fuse box. 2 in the left side IP fuse box. 1 for the upper stop light and 1 for the lower stop lights. The fuse box in the IP is where the upper and lower stop lights split. Let me know.
