Sounds like you have a bad coil pack this will cause the motor to miss on 1 or more cylinders thus causing the backfire you are describing this is more than likely your problem, another thing it could also be is water in your gas this will also cause a backfire due to the engine trying to burn the water that is coming thru your fuel lines but more than likely it will be your coil pack hope this helps.

I recently had the same issue, but my airbag warning lights also turned on. If this is the case, it might be the clockspring. There is a recall on clocksprings for Caravans 1998 - 2000 I believe. I got it replaced for free in the dealership. Enter your VIN in this site and it will tell you if you are covered in the free replacement warranty.

Hope this helps.

Runs crappy. when you give it gas it backfires. and the van hardly runs

We need some more information. Are there any engine warning lights on? Have you changed the engine air filter lately? Sounds like the engine isn't getting enough air.

I have a dodge caravan 2000 with v6 when first starts up in morning it runs fine afte it warms up it hesitates and sometimes backfires when you give it gas I have to feather the gas pedal to drive. When...

Symptoms look like a faulty crank position sensor. Remove it and give it an inspection, if it looks OK give it a clean, especially the tip. Check the electrical connection so that it is free of dirt and corrosion. If there is a spacer beneath the CPS make sure it has not got thicker due to rust, wire brush it - the CPS tip is very sensitive to crank ring proximity. Check that there is electrical continuity between the CPS electrical connections - infinite resistance = broken circuit = dead CPS. Reinstall it and see if sorts any problems out. If no improvement change the CPS for a new one.

Spark plug wires. If you take it in a garage or wait till it's dark, and have somebody brake torque it while you watch, you'll see spark jumping. But don't get run over! Do it in reverse. Or just change the wires.

Hesitation at 40mph and 50 mph.

A pop and hesitation is likely a backfire. The hesitation around 40 and 50 would be in keeping with that theory. There are several reasons you might be getting backfires and hesitation. If your ECM is adjusting the engine to run too rich this could happen. Misfiring might be occuring. Timing could be out. But one of the most likely is a restricted exhaust, likely due to a plugged, damaged or worn out catalytic converter. In some cases the converter may be bad enough to be giving you some performance problems, but not yet quite bad enough to signal an error. A vacuum test can help confirm whether this is exhaust related.
