Question about 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

Want crank my car battery wasnt staying charge and a mechanic told me it was my starter sillnoid and my alternator and brought both part and put them on now my car wont crank at all

You probley left one of the little wires on the solinoid, off of the post with the 5/16s nut [small one] .or put it on the wrong post.. it has to be something to do with the way you hooked up your wires . the car would still crank if the alternator was installed incorrectly and your batter was charged . try charging the battery first see if it cranks.

Sounds like you have a bad starter. To check this you can try taking a hammer to the starter and tap it while someone in the car turns the key. If it starts you know you have a bad starter and need to replace it. Hope this helps you out

First, disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
Second, disconnect alternator wires, one connector and one fuseable link attached to the stud.
Third, reconnect the battery cable to the battery.
Fourth, turn the key to the run position and check for voltage on all three wires, all three should light a test light.

Ok, i understand that you have replaced the alternator, but there seems to be a non charge state in this case. i recommend checking the charging system. use the procedure below to isolate this issue.

Wear protective eye wear and clothing and remove all jewelry when checking your battery and charging system. Jewelry is a good conductor of electricity and is not recommended. Most batteries wear out every 3 to 5 years and need to be replaced. Always replace your battery with an equal replacement battery to assure proper operation. Automotive batteries have a +positive terminal (red), - negative terminal (black). The battery in this illustration has a protective cover over the positive terminal to prevent short circuit in case of an accident. Electricity is stored in the battery and then supplied to the vehicle when the engine is not running. While the engine is running the vehicles alternator charges the battery for future use. (Note: never disconnect the battery while the engine is running. If the battery cable is disconnected from the battery a spark can be generated which can cause the battery to explode or a major electrical malfunction to occur.)

To check a battery surface voltage, remove the positive terminal protective cover. Connect the +positive side meter lead (red) to the positive side battery terminal. Connect the - negative (black) side meter lead to the negative battery terminal. With the vehicle not running and the car sitting over night the battery voltage should be between 12.5 and 12.8 volts.(You will need to use a voltmeter for this testing procedure)

The alternator is rotated by a drive belt driven by the vehicles engine while it is running. Electrical voltage and amperage are generated to recharge the battery and supply voltage to the electrical system of the car. The alternator is held in place with mounting bolts. There is a main electrical wire on the rear of the alternator that supplies voltage to a main voltage junction box. If your alternator is not charging properly, your battery will slowly drain down from operating all the electrical systems in your car and stop the car from running.(most non charge states will be the cause of a loose belt or a low tension rate, due to a mis-adjusted alternator. make sure you have enough tension in the belt for full rotation of the alt pulley)

Next, you will need to check the alternators output with the Amp meter.

Testing the amperage output of the alternator is good for measuring the amount (not the level) of voltage the alternator can produce. This test can be tricky because if the alternator is weak it can still show it as producing amperage. Which is good, but if the voltage is low, it will still allow the battery to go dead. To check the amperage output of an alternator an amp meter is needed. Once the meter is connected start the engine. Next turn on all electrical accessories and raise the engine idle to about 1200 RPM. The alternator should output the max amperage it was designed to produce. Example: a 90 amp alternator should output about 88 amps. Note: An alternator cannot sustain maximum output for long periods of time. If the alternator is forced to operate at maximum output it will overheat and fail. An alternator is designed to operate at max amperage output only for a reasonable amount of time.

((Connect the voltage meter lead the same way you would in a battery static voltage check, Start engine (do not drive) at engine idle the voltage should be between 13.6 to 14.3 volts. If not the alternator may need replacing.)))

As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you clean or replace the battery connectors if necessary. This may be the cause why the battery light is on.

Once the battery connectors are all set please tighten the cables.

huh ..
you can change a battery and an alternator any time
with out "locking " the engine

does the motor crank over ?
check starter motor
check spark at plugs and fuel to injector rail

if it wont crank or start start .. then there are other issues
that may or may not have been caused by low voltage
before the battery and alternator was replaced

if the engine light is on there will be fault codes to read

Was told that the transmission card was reading low voltage, the engine will not turn at all

Have you had the battery checked? If it's flat then charge or change it, and then check if the charging circuit (alternator) is working. If it won't crank with a good battery then you need to get someone to check if the starter motor is ok

Battery not staying charged

The way I used to check alternator is while car is running I would take the negative cable off the battery if the car dies then the alternator is not putting out enough. The battery is used to crank the car. When the car is running the alternator provides voltage to run the car and charge the battery back up. Now day some car have some security which if the car dies when you take the cable off the anti theft will not let radio work till you put a code in it.
If not your battery or alternator it may be something draining your battery while it is off. If you have a light in the trunk, under hood under dash which may be staying on. I had a portable spot light which had a charger wired into my truck. I found the battery was bad in the light and the charger was charging 24 /7 and running my battery down.

Check Charging System/told not the alternator

Check your battery connections - where the cables connect to the battery posts AND where the cables connect to the starter/main power feed and where the ground cable connects to the engine and/or frame. A poor or corroded connection can cause intermittent problems and poor charging performance.

The battery's job is to supply power to the starter. After that, the alternator takes over and runs the rest of the system, including keeping the battery charged. If the alternator is bad, it can no longer charge the battery. Since you already had the battery tested, have the alternator tested. If that is not the issue, then have the starter checked. The gears inside might be binding or the solenoid might be bad.

Alternator wont stay charged.

Replace the large wire on the back of the alternator,with a new one,it comes off the back to the positive side of the battery,leave the old one on the alternator.

On a 1995 Chrysler Concorde it is trying to start but wont turn over. We took the alternator out and it was bad but the one we put in is still doing the same thing. Could it be fuel pump related

was the battery charged prior to replacing alt if it wasn't battery possible still to low/weak to start vehicle alt charges battery and also runs accessories / battery starts vehicle if it wasnt charged vehicle wont start if battery is charged check conections for loose or damaged
