SOURCE: no compression on cylinder 3 and air leaking sound

How do you know there is no compression? If you scanned it and you got a cyl3 misfire then remove your coil and make sure your spark plug is tight.

Reasons for popping noise:
Popping noise could occur due to the malfunction in the ignition system, leaky valves, weak cylinder compression, carbon accumulation in the combustion chamber or lean fuel.

Can I repair a bad cylinder without taking apart the motor in a 2000 Monte Carlo?


Are you talking about compression readings? If so, and you only have 30 psi, engine is in serious state of disrepair. The cylinder head will have to be taken off to fix the problem-sounds like a stuck valve, a non sealing valve, or a blown head gasket. There's no way to get to it without removing the head.
Apparently you had a compression test done? If you had done or would do a leak down test of that cylinder, it would pinpoint the source of the problem-whether an intake or exhaust valve, or a head gasket, or piston or ring damage. With a leak down test, wherever the air is escaping from the cylinder points to the source: if for instance, air leaks out the exhaust pipe, you know it is the exhaust valve not sealing in that cylinder. If air leaks out the intake-it's the intake valve.
Air hissing from the oil dipstick tube would mean compression is being lost past the piston rings-going into the crankcase.

I have a 90 Chevy 1500. 305, blew the head gaskets. Replaced them, but now I have no compression in cylinder 1. But before I tore the engine apart I tested the compression with my thumb and it blew it off....


Could be hydraulic lifter is holding valve open. Bring no 1 cylinder to TDC firing Lock engine from turning and with adaptor inject air to cylinder. If air comes out intake manifold then intake valve leaking. If comes out exhaust, you guessed it exhaust valve not closing. If comes out sump then bypassing rings. If comes out of radiator , head gasket leak into cooling system

Timing chain broke and bent valves in my 202 pontiac grand am, all has been replaced and now cylinder #3 has no compression


Put #3 cylinder in firing position then put air pressure in that cylinder and remove the oil cap. If air comes out throttle body the intake valve is leaking. If air comes out the tail pipe the exhaust valve is leaking. If air comes out where the oil cap came off the piston is leaking.

Low compression can be caused by different things. And NO YOU DON'T need a new engine yet. You need to take the car to a repair shop that you trust and have them do more tests. A bad Valve will cause low compression and thats a lot cheaper than a whole new engine. A bad head gasket can cause low compression and that's cheaper than a new engine. You need to have the repair shop do what's called a "leak down" test. This is where the cylinders are pressurized one at a time and if they are losing pressure, the mechanic can pretty much tell you the problem. For example if air is coming out the exhaust, then the exhaust valve has failed, and if air is coming out of the intake, the the intake valve has failed. If it bubbles out of the radiator then the head gasket has most likely failed. Take it in and let me know..

Cylinder 3 not firing


Check the compression on that cylinder and if it is below 140 lbs. then there might be a valve problem, if the compression is alright then the problem will most likely be a leak at the intake manifold, and there is a large gasket under the intake manifold that seals off the entire plenum and they usually leak right around the #3 cylinder.

Ce lights on code reads #3 cylinder misfire


I assume this 'complete' tune up was plugs, wires and plennum (intake surge tank) gasket?
If so, recommend you first check to see if you are getting an injector pulse to the #3 injector (a noid light is normally used to verify the injector is receiving the 'pulse' from the ECM. The noid light is a very useful tool in finding out if you have problems with your fuel injector. It is cheap (around 10 dollars per piece), easy to use (if the light blinks, your injector is receiving the electrical pulse to open). If after you verify the injector pulse is present, the next step is to determine if the injector or cylinder is the problem. A simple verification process requires swapping the #3 injector with another to see if the misfire moves to the swapped cylinder.(.i.e, move #3 injector to #2 cylinder & the #2 injector to #3 cylinder.).. Then run engine to see if the P0303 changes to P0302. This would VERIFY the injector is in some way defective. If the misfire STAYS at #3 cylinder, you'll want to perform a compression test of all the cylinders. If after this test you find #3 cylinder is more than 10% lower than all the other cylinders, do a 'Leak-Down' test to determine if the low compression is due to leaky valves (intake or exhaust) or whether the piston/rings are the problem. NOTE: If all the cylinders are withing 10% of each other during the compression test, the possible causes are, injector O-ring leak, vacuum leak at the intake manifold at #3 cylinder, or the spark plug not firing under compression.
