I have a 85 coupe,the pumps are notorous for going out.Best bet is empty the whole tank.the pump .Is easy to pull its under the filler door.1 make sure its not your security system shutting off
your injectors .2 turn key in on poss and open gas door you should hear the motor.If not
disconnect batt and remove.be car e you dont lose the screen.once out dry off and hook up to any batt to check.there only 30 bucks but make sure you ground it out right and dont turn it on in a dry tank ,you will burn it out.

Same thing happened to me. It was giving me problems starting it. It died on me at the stop sign last week. I kept driving. On Friday it shut down on me while doing 60mph on the hwy. I towed it to the nearest dealer. The said they had top replace the cranck sensor and a cam sensor. I paid $1,043.01 for that. Today I couldn't start it....

Before you replace the fuel pump, I would check the cheaiper parts first. Such as fuel filter and injectors.

That is the classic symptom of an electronic component overheating, and it could be a problem with the fuel pump, the ignition module inside of the distributor could be faulty, or the ECM (Engine Control Module) could be faulty, and the ECM's that were manufactured back then were prone to faults, and that is also why they can be purchased for only around $70.00 at most auto part stores.
The ignition module located inside of the distributor is what generates the signal that the ECM (Engine Control Module) uses to time and fire the fuel injectors, as well as the signal to run the fuel pump and the dwell signal timing to fire the ignition coil. A faulty ignition module can cause any one of these systems to malfunction.
That does sound like a malfunction with the ignition module inside of the distributor, and you can remove the ignition module and have it tested for free at most auto part stores.
If you do purchase a new ignition module be sure that it does come with a silicone grease or a die-electric compound because it is a heat sink and the ignition module will burn up without it.
To install the new ignition module first clean out the mounting surface inside of the distributor. Then completely coat the metal contact surface under the ignition module with a thick coat the silicone grease or die-electric compound and do not leave any of the metal contact surface of the ignition module un-coated with the silicone grease or die-electric compound, and be very careful not to over-tighten the ignition module or it will be damaged.
