SOURCE: Running noise in the dash, runs down a new battery

Ah ha! The intake valve for the interior temp. control was continuing to run after the engine was off. It was making noise (like a running fan). I removed it. So what the auto temp does not work. It is an old car... if you get hot turn down the air, if you get cold, turn up the heater. Removing this did not affect the effectiveness of the heat or air.

1999 Hyundai Lantra runs and then wont start

Either a weak battery or a defective starter. Have you checked your battery voltage when it will not crank? Cleaned your battery terminals?

Hi, I own an accent CRDi '06. My problem is that, engine wont start in the mornings. But it does start on push start. After that it runs normally throughout the day and starts normally. I've checked...

when an engine will not start off the starter motor but will push start it indicates a problem battery or dirty battery posts or terminals
what is happening is that the capacity of the battery is reduced( especially on cold mornings) and the current draw to the starter drops the available current available to the ECM for the ignition system and so it will not power up
push starting is diverting all available power to the ECM so it starts
unless a jumper battery is connected correctly( positive to positive and negative to the engine --not the negative of the battery) it is just feeding power to the dead battery and nothing is achieved for the ECM and ignition system
to check a battery correctly a load tester has to be applied to the battery and when the test is applied , there is a discharge across a resistance equal to a starter motor draw and that is referred to a voltage drop on the meter
batteries will read a 12 volts across the terminals but when loaded down that voltage drops to around 10 volts for a good battery and less than 6 for a faulty battery
the other item of concern is that when the starter is engaged , there is a requirement for the run circuit to be energized so that spark can be produced and if that circuit has a faulty wire or connections the problem could be there
Take the car to an accredited auto electrician, have the battery load tested and have the circuit on the start side of the ignition switch checked

Mechanic was not sure how to reset maintenance overdue message once he serviced car. He tried pressing and unpressing trip odometer a few times without success while car was not running.

Got this of a forum. It's for the key less cars. Credit goes to the original poster.

2008-2009 Volvos with starter push button on dashboard

The trip odometer must have at least 0.1 mile on it or the light will not reset.
Get in vehicle and do not push down on the brake pedal
Put the key in the slot and push the starter button once
Press and hold down the odometer reset button
While doing this, push the starter button again and hold for 2 seconds
Keep the odometer reset button held in and watch the instrument cluster for the general warning indicator (I) to illuminate. When this happens, release the button.
Turn the vehicle off then back on and verify the message is now out.

Car will not start- checked fuses -replaced starter- checked battery-have power to all- if run direct wire to starter it will start. Is there a link between battery and starter?

Yes, there should be a second power wire that runs from the positive terminal post down to the starter itself. You might also have a Starter Relay, which means that from the positive terminal post of the battery it runs to a relay usually connected to the fender well that then has a wire that runs down to the starter.

Engine wont turn ovwer

Check battery terminals are clean and firmly connected.

Check the transmission neutral interlock switch operation is OK.
Check +12V is appearing on the starter solenoid control wire when the ignition switch is held in the 'start' position.

If above ok, apply +12v directly to the starter solenoid activation control -starter should immediately engage.
If it doesn't run, you likely have a faulty starter motor.

Have battery but engine wont turn over

1.Do the headlights come on? Are they as bright as they should be? No? Check the battery cables, and connections. A corroded battery cable terminal end, and battery terminal will cause this. (Even side post batteries have a terminal. It's just a flat area with a threaded hole) Side post batteries are notorious for acid leaking out of the side post area, and corroding the connections. (I change everyone of my vehicles to use a Top Post battery)

2.Battery terminals and battery terminal ends clean? Battery cables good? Then it's the starter solenoid, or the starter itself.

Inside the starter solenoid, (Mounted to the starter. It's that cylindrical looking object on top of the starter), are contacts. These can burn, and wear out over time.

Inside the starter are brushes. The starter is just an electrical motor. The brushes wear down over time, and do not make contact anymore.

If somehow this is the original starter, and starter solenoid, consider yourself LUCKY! It has seen it's use, and is well past time to be changed.
