If your hinges aren't welded on you can buy some shims from your local auto parts store and shim it behind the hinges to make it right. Sometimes you can just loosen and move the hinges. If you have welded hinges you might have to get a couple of people together and try to bend the hinges. Good luck.

I can't get my 95 gmc tailgate to come off. I know that you usually open it alittle and it will come off. But mine will not. So I would like to know if there is a trick to taking a 95 sonoma tailgate off.

  1. Lower the tailgate to the horizontal position.
  2. Disengage the cable on the right and left sides from the striker bolts. To accomplish this, pull up on the middle of the cable assembly while raising the gate to a 45 degree angle, but be careful not to pinch the cable between the gate and bed.
  3. Remove the tailgate from the vehicle by lifting upward on the left side to separate the left hinge assembly, then disengage the right hinge.
To install:
  1. Install the gate to the vehicle by lowering the right hinge assembly into position first, then holding the gate at a 45 degree angle and seating the left hinge assembly.
  2. Engage the left and right cables to the striker bolts.
  3. Verify proper tailgate latching and operation.

How do you remove the tailgate on a chevy 3500 HD. I want to replace with a 5th wheel tailgate

It should work like this: Let the gate down, take the 2 cables loose from the top, lift the gate a little and tilt it out on the drivers side. The hinge at the bottom left is slotted. When that corner comes out just pull the gate towards the left and the right side will slide off it's hinge.
