The U joint is glued in place if there the original. I use and blow torch to heat up the U joint's to melt the glue and use a hydraulic press to get the old u joints out. Do not use a 5 pound hammer to hammer out the U joint unless you don't mine a vibration in your drive shaft. The drive shaft are lighter now then the past and will damage to hard hammering. If there is a Auto Zone around your area, you can lone out a U joint removal tool which is cheaper then a new drive shaft. It's like a clamp, but one end has a cup shape to hold the drive shaft as the other end pushes the U joint out. Good luck and hope this helps. P.S don't burn your self.

remove the rear shaft from a 1990 full size gmc van (g-van) make sure the one you select has the scew on sleeve at the front of the rear section of the shaft
this will be the right lenght
take the rear yolk off your old shaft cut of the ball socket now get the same u-joint your truck calls for and mount the rear yolk (the section of the shaft that bolts to your rear end) to the new shaft
this works ive done it
you eliminate 2 of the 4 u-joints and lighten up your shaft this releives strain on you tranny and rear end when these u-joints and ball bearings fail they cause the vibrations which ruin the rest of your drive train also you gain 10hp
i spent 300 bucks rebuilding the OEM shaft and got no where so for 25 bucks i did this

You can pick up an entire re manufactured axle assembly at your local auto parts store. In order to replace the assembly you will need to disconnect the tie rod end and the ball joint. Remove the spindle nut. Push the axle stub out of the hub. Now with a suitable container under the axle to catch spilled fluid pry the axle from the transmission housing. Install is the reverse of removal. For more detailed instructions and diagrams go to www.autozone.com vehicle repair guides.

the drive shaft is fastened with just four bolts, you need to remove those bolts using a spanner or socket wrench so you could pulldown the shaft and you need to mark the shaft end where it was originally matched up because the shaft is perfectly balanced to avoid vibration while rotating. the universal joint comes with a circlip ring and you need to remove those so you could take out the old uni-joint...hope this helps..
