89 gmc sierra screwed up while driving

I was driving my 89 gmc sierra 2500 last night when all of the sudden it sounded like i was in the wrong gear. So i down shifted and tried everything and it would not accelerate. Now it wont start up. The engine turns over but thats about it. I left it parked in 1st gear and that seams to still be strong as I was not able to push it while in 1st gear.

Sounds like you may have broken your timing chain. Try doing a compression test. You should get pressures no less than 90-100 psi. If you find extremely low pressures, you probably lost the chain. This could have caused valve train problems. Good luck

If you need to have a shop look at the compression, it should cost about 1 hour shop time. Ask for an estimate always.

Your belt should not be affected at all.

If they agreed with me why would you give me a bad score when all I did was to help, Hope you can have this problem repaired as you like. Moe

4 wheel drive will not engage on my 1989 gmc sierra 2500?

actually that first soultion is wrong it is correct on smaller pickups but on the full size pick ups they use a differnet sytem
there a electric actuator on front axle
there be two elctrical plugs on front axle u want the bigger of the two other one is just to turn the 4 wheel drive light on
un plug actuator then remove actuator after it removed plug it back in but leave it out of axle turn key on and shift down to 4 wheel drive the actuator should move out if it dont that your problem if i does move this isnt your problem it either the tranfer case or in front axle

No 5th or reverse on Sierra 2500

hi, this could point to one of a couple of things now the first and most obvious would be that the clutch needs replacing due to it being to low as this would indeed give you the problem your having.
Now the second problem could be that the nylon bushes on the gear selector could be worn and may need replacing, but if you can get all the other gears no problem then this is less likely so depending on how long ago the clutch was done i would think it could have gone and need replacing.

now if its a cable clutch their maybe some adjustment you could do at the gear box end you would need to see where the clutch cable goes into the gear box and see if their is the option of screwing a nut at the end of the cable that will allow you to take up some play on the clutch if their isnt any adjuster or you have fluid clutch then the chances are it will need replacing.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Strange noise!

My 2005 GMC 2500HD (8.1 lt) had the same problem. I just had an exhaust leak fixed today. The right front manifold bolts were broken and the manifold was warped. The repair was 6.5 hours labour plus gaskets, seals, bolts and the manifold machining (parts were $130 CDN).
