Pull the fuse panel cover in front of the passenger footwell; check for corroded or blown fuses.

Mine is an 88 cant imagine its different, thereis a plastic tank on the rhs of the trans that has a screw off lid, you will need the car on stands or a hoist level and with the oil at opperating temp you will also need a bottle pump or some type of plunger to fill it the engine must be running and add the fluid slowly allow time for it to be taken into the trans repeat until at the mark and stays there

You dont need to take off the intake manifold but the cold air intakes these unclip grab the convaluted tubing and pull it straight back out of the aircleaner then lift it up and un clip the bottom then pullit out of the intake snorkle

I have the very same problem - Were you able to solve it ?

I've cleaned the Idle control valve several times and it seems to help overall but definitely not the cause ! - I think it might be the Coolant temp. sensor - have you tried changing that ?, did it work ?

You can adjust it by tapping the pin on the top down. Check out this youtube video that shows the process.

MY 85 928 won't hold an idle. I thought it was the air idle control valve but found the car had a Bosch 'Air Slide' instead. This was bench tested and is working......is there also an air idle control...


Not sure, but have you checked ALL of your vacuum lines for cracks/leaks - most likely cause is an air leak in vacuum lines or fuel inlet.

should be located in the passenger side footwell though being that your one right hand drive may be in the drivers footwell behind the side plastic should look something like this

The car dies around 45mph?

88 928 will start but then it will stall or the tach will bounce the car will rev up and down by it self. can take off a3k rpm then it is fine but may stall out at next stop


It could be the MAF (mass air flow meter), or the ISV (idle stablizer valve. The problem with 928s are all the sensors, meters, and valves that can create the same symptoms when they fail. The Temp II Sensor can create the same idle problems when the car is cold. If you're more of a DIYer, try forums.rennlist.com. It's a great community of Porsche owners. If you go the the 928 forum, you can search threads or just post your problem. The members there are very knowledgeable and helpful.
