Water in my radiator is flowing wrong direction when i turn the engine over....problem started just after the engine very rapidly overheated.....no heat to inside of cab also....the coolant will actually shoot out of radiator and hit the inside of the hood when hood is open with cap off and cold engine

First thing is first what year make and model of vehicle is it. It actually sounds like you may have more then one problem. Next thing is are you using the correct mix ratio and type of coolant. Basically the orange/red. I see you say the radiator water, should be coolant correct? Is it still over heating are your fans coming on. Is the coolant gauge appear to warm up and stay midrange? Is your coolant reservoir cap busted? Are your lines or fittings dry rotted or leaking? Does it have a radiator precooler? Is it over serviced? Is your thermostat in stalled correctly ands it working right? Is your "water pump" leaking?

SOURCE: Coolant filling up overflow bottle

You may need to ask AAA to put a radiator pressure tester on the resevoir bottle and pump it up to operating pressure(Pressure cap rating) and see if it over pressurises while it is running at operating temp,rev engine up and down and watch what the testers pressure readings do,it should move up and down in sync with the water pump.If the pressure keeps building i would have to believe that combustion chamber gases are over pressurising your cooling system.Also test the pressure cap is functioning within factory specs.

SOURCE: 2.3l ranger keeps overheating, been through two radiators already.

Hello Ranger Joe, eight months and two radiators is very uncommon. Question, Have you visually confirmed the leak in the radiators or is the leak near the hose connections? Replacing the radiator, cap, water pump, & the thermostat leaves only two others, the hoses and the engine block/heads. Far fitched will be something or somebody poking holes in the radiator.

Why did my 2011 DTS Cadillac overheat?


An overheated engine can be caused by anything that decreases the cooling system's ability to absorb, transport and dissipate heat; therefore engines can overheat for a variety of reasons. Let's take a look at some of the most common causes.
Cooling System Leaks
This is the primary cause of engine overheating. Possible leak points include hoses, the radiator, water pump, thermostat housing, heater core, head gasket, freeze plugs, automatic transmission oil cooler, cylinder heads and block. Perform a pressure test. A leak-free system should hold pressure for at least one minute.
Wrong Coolant Concentration
Be sure to use the coolant recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer. The wrong type of coolant and/or mixing the incorrect concentration of coolant and distilled water can also result in engine overheating. The best bet is to perform a complete flush and fill.
Bad Thermostat
A thermostat is a heat-sensitive valve that opens and closes in response to engine temperature. Heated engine coolant passes through to the radiator when the thermostat is in the open position. In the closed position, it prevents the flow of coolant to speed up the warming of a cold engine. When the thermostat gets stuck in the closed position, coolant stays in the engine and quickly becomes overheated, resulting in engine overheating.
Blocked Coolant Passageways
Rust, dirt and sediment can all block or greatly impede the flow of coolant through the cooling system. This can limit the system's ability to control engine temperature, which may result in higher operating temperatures and engine overheating. Once again, a flush and fill is recommended to remove debris.
Faulty Radiator
By passing through a series of tubes and fins, coolant temperature is reduced in the radiator. Leaks and clogging are some of the most common causes of radiator failure. Any disruption in the radiator's function can lead to elevated engine temperature and overheating.
Worn/Burst Hoses
A hose that contains visual cracks or holes, or has burst will result in leaks and disrupt the flow of engine coolant. This can result in overheating.
Bad Radiator Fan
A fan blows air across the radiator fins to assist in reducing the temperature of the coolant. A fan that wobbles, spins freely when the engine is off, or has broken shrouds will not be able to reduce the temperature to proper level, thus possibly resulting in engine overheating.
Loose or Broken Belt
A belt is often the driving link that turns the water pump at the correct speed for proper coolant flow through the cooling system. If a belt is loose or broken, it cannot maintain the proper speed, thus resulting in poor coolant flow and ultimately, engine overheating.
Faulty Water Pump
Known as the 'heart' of the cooling system, the water pump is responsible for pressurizing and propelling engine coolant through the cooling system. Any malfunction of the water pump, including eroded impeller vanes, seepage or wobble in the pump shaft, can prevent adequate coolant flow and result in engine overheating.

Car is overheating even though the fan is connected directly.


can you turn the fan easily when the engine is off ?
if the answer is yes, you have a viscous fan hub ( fan clutch) and it is in need of replacing
the fan will spin but has no direct drive to pull the air through the radiator
if the fan is bolted directly to the water pump shaft hub, the I suggest that you start with a compression test, then a coolant system pressure test , followed by a radiator flow test to check for blocked cores

Sometime when i g start my 1987 corvette its acts like its dead, i turn on the key all the lightcome icluding the secuity light but it will not turn over, iof i wait for like 10 minutes go back out an


no crank, it called.
what lights come on, there are like 30 lights or more.
HL, parking, dash , warning, dome, tail, stop. blinkers and dimmer dash lights. to name but a few.
sounds to me like , custom alarm, and is acting up.
but id need to sit in the cockpit to see whats' really going on.

all gas engines eveny back in mid 80s, or model A ford
the starter can be hot wired or jumper cable cranked.
see that tiny lug on the solenoid ,
so if jumper cables fail. (off running car) sill dead?
then you next hot wire the starter solenoid tiny lug
fails to crank, ? then hit the side of starter with a hammer
crank now>?

ok , hot wiring the solenoid (key is pocket)
the starter turns the crankshaft over fast,
the starter and battery are working now. so what is wrong
this is called the KEY line.
the KEY line is dead.
my wild guess, is aftermarket alarm installed and its breaking the key
line, like many do.

Try removing the thermostat and reverse flushing the motor, Actually try flushing in both directions, this will tell you if you have a circulation problem but 1 thing you should know is that the water goes in the water pump and out the thermostat, try running it without the thermostat and check your water flow

Hello... I got problem with my honda odyssey. For the past 3 days, if i start the engine, after 5 min the temperature will goes up to HOT and engine indicator light-up. I turn-off the engine and then start...


Your English is very good.

From what you have described, which is a rapid over heating of the radiator coolant fluid and therefore a hot engine condition, it would appear that the thermostat in the engine's cooling system is faulty.

If the thermostat is sticking in the closed or nearly closed position temporarily, there will be no flow or very little coolant flow between the engine and the radiator and the engine will overheat.

You have advised that after the engine is shut off , and radiator coolant fluid has cooled, you re-start the engine and drive the car without the overheating condition occurring again and the radiator coolant temperature is normal. This time there is no overheating because the thermostat is working normally.

You should have the thermostat replaced as soon as possible because allowing the engine to overheat can cause very expensive engine damage.

If you had a continuing overheating condition then I would suspect both the thermostat and the water pump. However as the overheating seems to be only temporary, and clears itself after you have shut down the engine and re-started it 10 minutes later (without further overheating arising) then I think you only have a faulty thermostat.

Please also check that the electric fans which draw air through the radiator are operating. These run on a temperature sensor and will switch on automatically once the radiator coolant fluid reaches a certain temperature and then switch off again when the fluid temperature reduces. You will hear them running once they start up. If these fans are not working the radiator coolant can quickly overheat in various driving and temperature conditions because there will be insufficient air flow through the radiator to cool the fluid. If the temperature sensor is faulty or has died, or if the electric motors running the fans are faulty, the fans will not operate.

My 1987 corvette coup motor gets hot real fast , I check therostat and thats not the problem , any idea what else it can be ?


Could be a faulty temperature sensor, at wost it's going to be a bad head gasket or intake manifold. Sorry for the bad news and hope that it's just a faulty temp sensor.

Thank you for using fixya and check your engine oil to make sure there is no coolant mixing in with your engine oil. Coolant is corrosive to your engine's internal bearings.

I own a 1990 Chevy Lumina car. I had a new radiator put in it. Then I replaced the jhoses, water pump and thermastat. After refilling the system, I ran the motor for 7-8 minutes idling, then I ran it at...


It could be the fan temp. switch but it shouldn't have been boiling in the overflow tank. I'd recommend doing a compression test to see if you have a blown head gasket. If it's a blown head gasket, the compressed air/fuel mix being force into the cooling system could well look like boiling in the over flow tank.

Car overheating, blows cold air out vents, changed engine,radiator,thermostat,water pump, and heater core


A couple of things to check because as you describe your symptoms you actually have 2 problems

1. No heat from vents.

Sounds like the heater water flow valve cable is kinked disconnected or the valve itself is stuck You will need to follow your heater core water supply lines to find the valve usually to the right of the center console in the ducting area / large plastic housing for heater and AC internal coils. If the valve works then there is a possibility that the heater core water supply lines have been bypassed on the engine side of the firewall with a coupling due to a leaking heater core. And l;astly the heater core could just be clogged. (quite rare!!)

As for the overheating engine after all of the work you have done.. Perform this simple test.

1. remove radiator cap
2. have someone else start the car
3. watch for water coming out of the open radiator cap area DURING start...
4. have person in the car rev engine gently 2 or 3 times. No need to exceed 2000 RPM. If water rapidly flows out of the radiator during engine revs.. you have some major engine issues.
If it passes all of these checks then the only thing left is improper hose connections on the engine side of the firewall and or a hydraulic water lock in the block that should clear itself by starting and stopping the engine many times with the radiator cap off.
