Question about 1993 Audi 100

Open Question

Where is the radiator cap on the audi 100 cs? Just got the car with no owner's manual. drove it on highway about 300 miles (check engine light came on after bout ten minutes of driving) and parked it overnight. Next day (today) I drove back and forth on city streets about 10 miles, then another 50 on highway (each time check engine light comes on after about 10 min of driving). After exiting highway and driving about 5 miles, smoke from the hood, coolant bubbling and overflow, then the oveheating light came on. Any insight? Really need help.

I appreciate all the insight. I will try out the affordable suggestions tomorrow after the car has overheated and see what that brings.

SOURCE: Coolant light on an AUDI TT 2000

It sounds like it is low on coolant. Coolant expands when it warms up so if it is just low enough to trip the switch when it is cold it will shut the light off when it warms up. You should be ok to just top it off but be sure that what you put in is compatible with what is in it. There must also be a leak somewhere in the system for you to have lost some to begin with. Depending on how many miles you have on the car it wouldn't hurt to have the cooling system flushed if it's never been done before. If you do get it flushed take it to the dealer to have it done. Explain to them the low coolant and have them check the system for leaks at the same time. Hope this helps

SOURCE: electrical problem 1993 Audi 90 CS

The 1993 90 instrument cluster is very sensitive.  Even having bulbs out can mess it up.  You should consider replacing the ignition switch.  It is easy you can do it yourself, do NOT let Audi dealer's service tell you it's $500 to do it.  You can get the part for less than 30 bucks on ebay.  Undo the screws under the steering wheel, take off the plastic, take out the 2 screws on the instrument cluster, take out the cluster enough to see the ignition switch.  THis is the tricky part:  get a small screw driver and LOOSEN the small screws that keep the ignition switch in place.Replace.  Re-tighten, put it all back and you're done.
Ignition switch is EVERYTHING in this car.  Oh, do not by the switch with the pink plastic where the key would go, buy the WHITE.

Before you do anything else you are just going to have to read the codes. So buy the maintance book at autozone, locate the little juction box on the fire wall and jump the terminals with a little wire. Then of course sit in the drivers seat turn on the key(do not start) and read the blinks. Then you will know what the problem is.

SOURCE: 2003 Audi A4 1.8T Check Engine light on

The CEL means there is a Diagnostic Fault Code stored in the Engine Control Unit. There are 1000's of DTC's, so you will need to have it read by a Code Reader. Auto Parts stores like Auto Zone, Pep Boys, perhaps even Advanced Auto often will read the code for you; but by law they cannot clear the codes. Many codes do not cause drivability problems, severe ones will trigger the ECU to run in a Limp Mode, which would require repair work before any trip longer than a few miles. Hope this is helpful.

The light is letting you know that the engine is oveheating. You did not mention how many miles are on the car, so the over heating could be a number of factors; Thermostat is stuck closed, cooling fan is not operating, radiator is leaking...to name a few.
