I?ll add this; In addition to what my friend rejakwilson just said; I suggested that you check the performance of your electric Alternator; It seems it's NOT producing enough Volts. It must produce at least 13.7 volts with some loads ON. Such head light, air-condition ON. Alternator produces between 13.7- 14.8 volts to power the car accessories & charging the battery. Don't forget to clean or replace the fuel screen which is attached in the bottom of the fuel pump inside your fuel tank. you can access some fuel pump/filter assy. thru inside of your car aft cabin under the aft seat, that is what is called internal fuel screen; however: there is another external filter some time underneath RH side of your vehicle, & some time in the engine compartment. SOURCE: 1999 durango will suddenly stop

Hi, I have some ideas about what may be wrong, but I don't want to ask you to troubleshoot without knowing the trouble code that set the engine light. Please get a free scan at your local parts chain, write down the trouble code, and send it to me in a reply. This will help narrow down the advice I give you. OK?

try replacing the idle air control valve. this control your idle speed,it is really easy to replace ,just 2 screws and a electric plug connection. Check around at the different auto parts stores and get a good price , do some comparison shopping. Your thottle sensor just acts like a accelerator pump on a carb. it tells your computer that you need an extra shot of fuel to your injectors when you press on the gas pedal..

Hesitancy sputter

Hello My Friend, hate to see you having problems with your vehicle! May i suggest you try this one procedure to check your fuel pump pressure while accelerating the engine to 2000 RPM. Electric fuel pumps start by-passing after so many miles of being used. And they show this in a strange and confusing way. Only way to catch this is by connecting a fuel gauge to the fuel rail of your truck and accelerate it to 2000 RPM, or what ever stage it stumbles. Your fuel pressure should hold steady at 55-60 PSI. If it drops down as you accelerate you need to replace the fuel pump in your tank. And this problem should go away. Hope this all works out for you Sir....

It's possible but unlikely. Still sounds like your battery is shot, and if so, jumping it may not work. First I would take it out and get it tested. If OK, your next step would be to check error codes (DTCs) with a code reader to see what's going on.

You have a sensor that controls this. It is a temp sensor. It could be called something else, but it is a sensor that measures your engine temps. It would shut the vehicle off if it is not working properly.

Check the mass air flow sensor (clean both heated wires with carb cleaner and Q-tip). Remember...cleaning does not always work...sometimes they are actually bad. Also check map sensor. Check for vacuum leaks at all hoses and fittings. If engine rpm drops sufficiently, engine vacuum will drop which may have caused a/c malfunction (controls work with vacuum signal) so I wouldn't worry about that 'till the run problem is dealt with.

It could be a spark plug, plug wire, or a coil. Sometimes thay break down intermittently. If it needs a tuneup, that would be the first thing to do.

Will start but rpm gauge jumps up and down then it dies

The problem you describe has NUMEROUS causes. Most common of these is a COIL is going bad. The RPM gauge gets its signal from the ignition coil/crank sensor circuit (could be either one OR could be the wiring between the engine control module (ECM) and the engine components. Does the Check Engine light come ON when this happens? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what, if any codes are set, then we can go from there.

Sometimes will not start

whenever you loose RPM it indicates that the ECM is failing and usually after the vehicle cools down it will start like nothing happened so the first place to start with this problem is the vehicles ECM
