Question about 1998 Volvo S70

1 Answer

I have a 1998 Volvo S70. In cold start up, car runs 15 seconds, then dies out. It won't start after that. I've cleaned throttle body, cleaned out air induction pump, and replaced air pump relay.

Does the car throw a check engine code? If so, what is that code?

This could also possibly be the ignition. My V70 had a bit of trouble on a couple of cold mornings. I replaced the ignition switch (located in the steering column on the opposite side of the key hole).

Also check the fuel pressure and fuel filter. Could be a pump and filter problem. Fuel condenses at lower temperatures and if the pump is having issue pushing the thicker fuel through the filter, take a look at that to be an issue.

Lastly, check the throttle and the fuel injectors. Run fuel system and injector cleaner like HEAT through the fuel tank to see if it helps.

No the volvo does not have a servicable filter, The best thing to do is to flush new fluid through the transmission periodically, replacing all of the fluid.

Volvo s70, 1998, heater not blowing hot air

Are you getting coolant flow through the heater core? These cars have common problems with heater cores but they are easy to replace. IPD has a Video on U-Tube with step by step instructions. Also if you are in very cold weather have you checked your anti-freeze? I saw a Toyota last year freeze completely because of no anti-freeze. It took days to thaw out the heater core and they were lucky that the ice did not blow it apart. It took me hours of starting it and running up to a low temp and shutting it down to get it drivable.

Runs good on highway lousy in town. no power, sometimes when i push excelerator there is no response at all then the car will die.

I've run into this problem on different makes and models, But I haven't done a volvo yet. This works to variing degrees, some would run better and some it was like installing a new engine. Anyway what I do is to clean the throttle body, you'll need a small brush( toohbrush) and a can of brake clean. remove the air plenum and clean inside the throttle, open the throttle plate and use the brush to clean as much as you can. Don't be afraid to use the brake clean. After you,ve cleaned start the engine, this may take a minute. rev the engine up and spray some of the cleaner in the throttle. Also check your air filter, if it's dirty replace it.

I hear that, about parts not necessary. Quite a discrepancy among those mechanics. All I could say is to find a mechanic who is familiar with Volvos.
My suggestion,. without knowing what codes were given, is that possibly your throttle body needs cleaning. This is where the air enters the engine, and carbon or fuel deposits tends to build up there. It can get black and dirty over time, and cause problems like rough idle or hesitation.
But anyway, find a smart and honest mechanic-not always easy, but they should be better than guessing after getting the codes.

I'm having the same problem. At first I thought it was bad fuel so I replaced the fuel filter to no avail. Then I cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor which also didn't work. Is your check engine light on?

Car starts runs for ten or fifteen minutes then just dies

Check fuel pressure when it dies? Or remove air intake hose at throttle body inlet, open throttle slightly,(with key off) and spray wd-40 inside throttle body for a second or 2, then try to start. If it starts for a second or 2 then quits, you have a fuel delivery problem, such as bad fuel pump or plugged fuel filter.
