Sounds like a serious vacuum leak on your intake. The negative pressure inside your intake manifold is used to determine how much fuel is needed for optimum delivery. Check for hoses cracked broken or detached.

can of Carb clean and sparay all around the intake manifold and any vacuum lines/canisters you can see. You'll get an idle change when you spray over a vacuum leak.

SOURCE: my truck blows white smoke

Hello!
There are two differnt reasons for black and white smoke coming from the tail pipe.
Black smoke means fuel runs rich (car getting to much gas). Check fuel pressure/air filter.
In some cases the white smoke means car is burning oil or transmittion fluid. Have tem checked/replaced.
If you can feel a smelly smoke it can be catalytic converter.
In a worsest scenario if car blowing white smoke it can be engine coolant is getting into an engine cylinder from a bad head gasket ,or a warped/cracked head. So you need to keep your eye on coolant level and check your engine for overheat. Also might be good to check your oil for traces of coolant (on a dipstick it would be a milky substance mixture of oil and coolant).
Good Luck

SOURCE: 2004 Excursion 6.0 diesel blows intermitent white smoke

I don't drive a Ford but I drive an International and white smoke on start up means the engine is too cold to properly burn the fuel. Your black oil or soot is unburnt fuel. You should look at your engine's preheat system for a malfunction.

Black smoke means buring rich. Have the vehicle's ECU scanned for codes and do the repair the codes describe. I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say Mass Air Flow Sensor.(MAF)

When first stating blows out black smoke then stops

the black smoke indicates the car upon start up is rich, getting too much fuel, then it gets burnt up that it stops smoking.have the fuel system cleaned as dirt in the injectors may cause the fuel to leak after shut down, like a flood condition.also have the fuel pressure regulator check it may not be maintaining fuel pressure at the correct pressure, too high of pressure.

Hi There,, with regards to the blue smoke when starting the engine from cold but none when warmed up, it could be the valve stem guide oil seals. you may need to remove the cylinder head and lap the valves in again but it should last you another 100,000 miles.

What causes a 97 yukon to go dead going down the road and hard to crank during cold weather... and has white smoke coming from tailpipes

If you have a failing alternator that could cause the vehicle to die while you're going down the road.
Also, the voltage regulator, ( usually in the alternator ) can not put a suficient amount of cahrge back in to the battery to charge it to it's peak. This could cause the vehicle to be hard to start in cold weather.

White smoke is usually associated with a bad fuel/air mix ratio. Because of the difference in humidity with the cold air it is not uncommon to see some white smoke from the tailpipes.

I hope this helps you.

If it's puffing black smoke out the tailpipe, it's probably the choke on the carburetor sticking closed and needs to be adjusted, or at very least freed up and lubricated.. Do you know what part I'm talking about? Do you need more guidance?

Heap of white smoke on startup but not always

White smoke usually occurs when there is not enough heat to burn the fuel. The unburned fuel particles go out the tailpipe and typically produce a rich fuel smell. It's not unusual to see white smoke in the exhaust during cold weather until the engine warms up.

Faulty glow plugs or control module can cause white smoke on engine start up.

Low engine cranking speed may also produce white smoke.

If white smoke is still visible after the engine has warmed up, the engine may have one or more bad injectors, retarded injection timing or a worn injection pump.

Low compression or air in the fuel system can also be a source of white smoke.

What color smoke out of the tailpipe ? Black - running rich , too much fuel or not enough air . Blue smoke - burning oil , piston rings valve seales , white smoke could be two different thing's - coolant in the cylinders or fuel going stright through the cylinder out the tailpipe . No combustion .
Check engine light on ? Have you replaced plugs an plug wires ,air filter , any engine sensors - TPS - MAP - MAF etc.... How many miles on the vehicle ? 1988 model - engine worn out ?
