Question about 1998 Ford F150 Regular Cab

2 Answers

I have a 1995 F 150.The overdirve does not work. Neither does the speedometer or odometer. I replaced the sensor on the outside of the transmission and also the sensor on the differential. It did not fix any problems. What else can I do?

Have you checked your fuses? If not, be sure they're all in good shape. If that's not it maybe you have a loose wiring harness somewhere.

SOURCE: odometer and trip odometer stopped working. Speedometer works.

The problem is going to be a worn or broken odometer gear. You can purchase the gear at odometergears.com for $29.00 with the shipping. Follow their how to repair on the Mustang to help in the repair. I believe you will have just the worm gear to replace.

SOURCE: speedometer & odometer not working after dead battery replacment

Remove the - (Negative) battery lead and wait for a few seconds. the refit BUT DONT LET the terminal arc keep it firmly pressed on while tightening. It seem as if this may have happened when you fitted the new battery as any rapid on off power to the management system will scramble it. You also dont say if you have driven it far as some times after a battery change depending on management system fitted around 20 miles before system workks out settings lost when power removed (happens after a sensor change aswell) hope this helps.

i believe it has a vehicle speed sensor in the rear diff that is probably your problem as the sensor you replaced in the transmission was probably the output shaft speed sensor

Transmission speed sensor

You could have a faulty speedometer/odometer combination meter causing a false Vehicle Speed Sensor error.
My 1998 Sienna had the following symptoms:
- Speedometer and odometer failed intermittently
- The check engine light would come on and I would get a p0500 code in the OBDII.
- The cruise control would stop working at the same time the speedometer failed.
There is a speed sensor in each one of the tires and they feed the speed information to the ABS ECU. From the ABS ECU the speed signal goes to the speedometer/odometer combination meter, and from there it goes to the Engine Control Module and to the Cruise Control ECU. I could see a signal coming into the speedometer/odometer, but no signal going out. Replacing the speedometer/odometer combination meter fixed the problem.

Sounds like a bad speedometer sensor. Usually located on the transmission. The only way to fix the speedometer/odometer is to replace the sensor.

The odometer quits working when the speedometer quits working. The most common cause for the speedometer to quit working is the speed sensor in the transmission. You said you replaced it, there is also a transmission speed sensor on your truck that may need to be replaced. I understand your frustration, but there is nothing else that would cause the speedometer to quit except the cable behind the gauges being clogged.

Odometer and speedometer do not work and Sport light flashing

Find speedometer sensor at rear of transmission, inserts into top firewall side of transmission. either the sensor has failed, the cable has came loose and backed itself out of housing ,or cable has broke.

Car speedo & odometer sometimes work OK, other times not at all.

Most likely a speed sensor is going bad (most cars and truck do not use mechanical speedometer cables anymore) most sensors are located near the differential in rwd cars or near the drive shaft on the transmission. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your car to help locate the speed sensor. Remove it and take it to the auto parts store so you can visually compare it to the replacement. Install the new speed sensor and it should restore your speedometer and odometer.
