Question about 1990 Ford Probe

High idle in drive

When I am in drive or reverse the idle is so high that on hills I am unable to come to a complete stop... its like I have one foot on the gas and one on the break. is there something that I can try to fix before I spend a lot on getting a shop to analyze it?

It cost nothing to have it read at autozone..sounds like a fuel injection problem or firing improperly ..I am leaning more towards your spark plugs and or timing ..check also your distributor and rotor

SOURCE: '93 Aerostar-stalls while driving/scary-stalls in 'drive' at stops

Wow!!! Now that's a headfull of problems....
This could be a great many things...
Check these before you sell. I have a '93 Aerostar and can't live without it.
1. Check idle speed
2. Fuel filter may be clogged or water in the fuel system.
3. Choke improperly adjusted or sticking.
4. Distributor components damp or damaged.
5. Faulty emissions components.
6. Faulty or incorrectly gapped spark plugs/ Also check wires.
7. Vacuum leak at the carburetor/fuel injection unit or vacuum hoses.
8. On 1986 models, stalling during idle or deceleration may be caused by sludge in the throttlebody. (2.3 litre engine)
9. On 1986 & 1987 models with a 2.3 litre engine, hesitation or stalling during acceleration may be caused by carbon build-up on the intake valves.....I hope this helps!! Adios

SOURCE: 1990 Ford Probe 2.2 automatic stalls in forward, reverse OK

Sounds like a bad IAC (idle air control valve/sensor) that controls your idle when going from throttle to idle. If bad your idle will act crazy and can cause stalls easily. Pretty sure that's it.

I have had this problem with my 90' SC, easy check is to clean your IAC valve. Carbon build up prevents if from working right.

Vehicle rolls back when idling in drive... will roll forward while idling in reverse as well

I fail to get the problem

If you have your foot on the brake-- it isn't going anywhere

Obviously, if you release the brake it will roll in either direction

The question is: did that not happen before-since you owned it-
& have you never had that ,whatever it is ,happen with any other vehicle?

Are you on a flat surface,if on a hill then the question is mute!

1.let car sit overnight. 2. Start engine, put A/C on high, let it idle for 20-25 minutes, 2, then drive car uninterrupted for 60mph for 10 minutes, 3. slow down to 25 mph for 4 minutes, come to a complete stop with foot on brake let it idle for 2 minutes, 4. drive again at 30 mph for 8 minutes, come to a complete stop let it idle with foot on brake for 3 minutes. 4. Drive at 40 mph (turn off overdrive) for 6 minutes. 5. Drive at 20mph for 3 minutes at a time, each time coming to a complete stop with foot on brake for 2 minutes. Do this 4 times. Let the car cool overnight and repeat entire process. Then check status of systems with a code scanner.

the question is-- was you foot on the brake at home or was just the hand brake applied
when driving , slowing , stopping standing , all have the foot on the brake which is activating a brake booster and if that is faulty , the vacuum leak causes the problem

Sounds like a Transmission Torque Converter Clutch
Try driving uphill with 1 foot on gas then tap the brakes at same time with other foot..
IF Engine does NOT rev up, the clutch is bad.

I HAVE A 2001 AZTEK AND WHEN ON AN UPHILL INCLINE STOPPED, YOU MUST KEEP FOOT ON BRAKE OR VEHICLE WILL ROLL BACKWARDS

This is normal, depending on the depth of the hill. This is frequent with standard/manual cars on uphills, they can roll back, but with automatic vehicles they usually have a small amount of throttle, (you'll notice this when putting your vehicle from park into drive with your foot off the break, it'll start slowly moving forward)
Now on the hill, if it's a steep incline your car will move backwards, it all depends on how high your throttle (the car itself) is, and the incline depth of the hill.

I have the exact same problem, however reversed. My whistling sound stops when I accelerate and starts when my foot is off the accelerator. Frustrates me and am afraid to have it looked at for fear of the cost of fixing this problem. Have you since discovered what the problem is or was?

Rolls excessively forward when downhill and put in reverse

No, it is not normal. Most people use only one foot when driving, no matter the conditions. However, in this situation I think you may be able to recover this issue by keeping your left foot on the brake, put the car in gear, LIGHTLY apply the gas then slowly remove your foot from the brake. However, I would strongly recommend that you take your vehicle to a shop that can service your transmission and see what they say. It could be just a simple adjustment.
