Question about Ford F-350

1 Answer

On a 2005 Ford F350 6.0 Diesel (yup it's a a lemon) The truck has cost $16K since out of warranty. I'm on my 7th alternator and 3rd set of batteries. If the truck sits for a day it won't start and everything tests fine! Good news is Ford's fixed it a few times already (they're sneaking up on it) but as the service manager put it "These diesel problems are tricky, you have to fix a few things before you find out what's wrong"! I not Willy off the pickle boat and I can't afford to pay them to 'fix' it any longer if it takes 'every penny I've got'! This is the most recent of a long list of issues with this truck! Any thoughts?

Well, the Diesel does not use Electronics to fire the cylinders. So you have a Timer system for the glowplugs and that is all. If you rig up a cheater light on one of the glowplugs and fuse it and run it to an added light inside the cab, you will know if the glowplug circuit is staying on or not. It should only activate a few flashes on each cold or lukewarm start and then stay off.

Alternator brush plug-in. The plastic clip containing the contacts for the tab in the Alternator can ride up when a Mechanic tries to install this wiring lead.

Rear window defroster staying on. Sneaky. Can be on without indicator light showing. Can break contact as Negative ground is disconnected.

Transmission solenoids and converter use electric. Possible short.

Battery Saver- Can deactivate charging system even at 70mph.
Anti-theft- Can reduce battery voltage to starter.

Would be interested in knowing final fix.

SOURCE: ford f250 superduty turbo diesel 7.3L Will not crank

Charge the batteries. take a Reading to make sure that you are getting almost 14v to both batteries. If it is not charging then take the alternator back off and have them check it. you might have bought a bad one. There is a way to test the glow plus with out taking them out. ( Take a piece of wire long enough to reach all the glow plugs from the battery. unplug the glow plug wire.If you touch the end of the glow plug with the hot wire it should make a little spark. if no spark then the glow plug is bad. do this to each one, but one at a time)

SOURCE: 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee battery will drain

Ditto here on a 2005 jeep. We bought it new and found the battery dead on a few mornings the first year. Nothing left on. Did the new alternator thing about 2 yrs. ago and a few batteries along the way. This is what we noticed..... If you leave a CD in the CD player, that is the prime little devil that sucks out the juice. Now, we never turn off the car while a CD is in the dash. Now, maybe not necessary every time, but always overnight and now by habit, all the time, we make sure there is no CD inserted when the car is off. Hope this helps.

How to change the alternator in my 2005 Hyundia Tucson? Can not get the bottom bolt out. What do I remove to get at it.

On the Tucson it is quite easy..... have changed 2 on my 2005 Tucson.....do it in this sequence and you shouldn't have any problems 1st disconnect both cables on the battery then do it 2nd remove serpentine belt... 3rd jack up the car at least where the tire is at least 4 inches off the ground.. 4th remove tire.. 5th remove inner splash guard.... 6th remove brake riser bracket... (2 bolts)... 7th remove upper bolt on alt... 8th remove upper alt bracket (2 bolts)....9th this is the hard one remove the lower bolt on the alt.... the bolt cannot be removed the lower mount actually drops into the mount.... it lifts up.... disconnect both cables one snaps in the other bolts on reverse the order and you can have it done in less than 2 hrs total time

The alternator went out on my 2005 Ford F250 with 6.0 Diesel. The batteries went dead. After replacing the alternator and recharging the batteries the ABS light stays on and the speedometer doesn't work....

Depending on why the alternator went out you could of caused a surge into the ABS module causing it to fail. Very common. The speedo comes thru the module which to me indicated the module failed.

On monday call modulemaster.com and run this by them. The module can be rebuilt for a couple hundred bucks.

If your sure you didnt leave anything unplugged getting a diagnoses or calling this place is going to be your only options.

Problem with alternator for 2005 Ford Focus.

Yes and no. Depending on conditions and idleing time that can determine life span. Also if battery is or was weak, belt misadjusted, did oil or anti freeze ever get into it. As you can see there are many factors in determining the expected life of an alternator. As a rule or guide line most will start going at around four to five years. Hope this helped answer your question, but electrical parts are the hardest to gauge.

Does this possibly qualify for the lemon law

Though it seems that you have the car that needs everything, I am fairly certain that lemon law requires that a particular single problem needs multiple repairs and after that, problem is still not resolved, but it may also apply to you. If the repairs were all warranty items, that may change things as well. The one item that "sticks out" as I read this is the two cat replacements...this is extremely unusual unless there is an unresolved engine problem, or, your dealer is "pumping up" their warranty claims to the manufacturer for some reason. Best place to find what you need to know is the consumer protection agency in your state, or, DMV. Hope it's running well now...you have lots of new parts!

2000 Ford Escape - Battery light

yup..it is the alternator. you don't normally repair alternators there right? it could be a diode problem or a regulator problem.

if you know how to replace the diode assembly in your alternator then you can try and also the IC regulator also could be the bad part.

you may want to check the simplest thing....the belt. if you have loose alternator belt then it could just be that one.( least of all cost )

tnx 4 using fixya,
