SOURCE: HARMONIC BALANCER

I have a '94 Tempo, it had a "ticking" sound. It was the "harmonic balancer" (crankshaft pulley) a local mechanic changed it for $60, the part cost me $120 (I work for a Ford dealership) $180 without employee discount. you can get one for much less at a junkyard if you can find one. Rotate the engine so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. Check that the timing marks are aligned on the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys. An access plug is provided in the cam belt cover so that the camshaft timing can be checked without removal of the cover or any other parts. Set the crankshaft to TDC by aligning the timing mark on the crank pulley with the TDC mark on the belt cover. Look through the access hole in the belt cover to make sure that the timing mark on the cam drive sprocket is lined up with the pointer on the inner belt cover.

  1. Loosen the alternator retaining bolts and remove the drive belt from the pulleys. Remove the water pump pulley.
  2. Loosen and position the power steering pump mounting bracket and position it aside.
  3. Remove the four timing belt outer cover retaining bolts and remove the cover. Remove the crankshaft pulley and belt guide.
  4. Loosen the belt tensioner pulley assembly, then position a camshaft belt adjuster tool (T74P-6254-A or equivalent) on the tension spring rollpin and retract the belt tensioner away from the timing belt. Tighten the adjustment bolt to lock the tensioner in the retracted position.
  5. Remove the timing belt.

To install:
  1. Install the new belt over the crankshaft sprocket and then counterclockwise over the auxiliary and camshaft sprockets, making sure the lugs on the belt properly engage the sprocket teeth on the pulleys. Be careful not to rotate the pulleys when installing the belt.
  2. Release the timing belt tensioner pulley, allowing the tensioner to take up the belt slack. If the spring does not have enough tension to move the roller against the belt (belt hangs loose), it might be necessary to manually push the roller against the belt and tighten the bolt.

The spring cannot be used to set belt tension; a wrench must be used on the tensioner assembly.
  1. Rotate the crankshaft two complete turns by hand (in the normal direction of rotation) to remove the slack from the belt, then tighten the tensioner adjustment and pivot bolts to specifications. Refer to the necessary illustrations. Make sure the belt is seated properly on the pulleys and that the timing marks are still in alignment when No. 1 cylinder is again at TDC/compression.
  2. Install the crankshaft pulley and belt guide.
  3. Install the timing belt cover.
  4. Install the water pump pulley and fan blades. Install upper radiator hose if necessary. Refill the cooling system.
  5. Position the alternator and drive belts, then adjust and tighten it to specifications.
  6. Start the engine and check the ignition timing. Adjust the timing, if necessary.

These are not very good but all I could find. The cam mark is about the 7 o'clock position. I cannot see the crankshaft marks in the side pic.

Search instead for Crankshaft Positioning Sensor CPS. It is through the timing cover behind the balancer and counts teeth on an exciter ring behind the timing cover telling the ignition when to fire. It points at the crank and are known to corrode in the timing cover. Note: I recently was involved with an issue on a Ranger where the balancer key sheared in two at the exciter ring for cause unknown. This threw everything off intermittently and was difficult to find.

At the front of the engine you will find a pulley that will drive the belts to run the water pump, alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner, etc. This pulley is called the 'Harmonic Balancer' and is actually 2 pieces pressed together on a rubber bush which acts as a 'shock absorber' for the engine. This pulley is marked with several lines to indicate the position of the engine rotation, measured in degrees. The longest line usually indicates TDC (Top Dead Centre of piston No 1). The other lines indicate where ignition should fire (Usually between 5-10 degrees before TDC) and where valves are opened and closed (before and after TDC) both ignition and valve timing vary depending on engine/camshaft configuration. The lines on the harmonic balancer will align with a pointer that is cast into the timing cover.

your crankshaft pulley aka Main pulley is bolted on to a harmonic balancer and the balancer sits on the crankshaft get a timing gun and figure out where the mark is on the harmonic balancer and there should be a metal plate somewhere on the timing chain cover with a mark to make the that when the number 1 piston is all the way up the marks are aligned or your timing is off

Once you get #1 piston up line the mark on the harmonic balancer up with the 0 on the timeing marker.

I need to find my timing position on my 1999 plymouth voyager 2.4 liter with diagram.


Base timing can be found with a timing gun and sharp eyes - should be marks on the crank pulley or harmonic balancer and another mark on the block - when the marks line up when the timing gun flashes, you are at base timing.

I need timing for 1988 4seallender ford ranger truck is back firing i think its out of time, need timeing marks


The timing marks should be on the outside of the timing belt cover and on the harmonic balancer. If you are unfamiliar with the proceedure I suggest getting a Chilton or Haynes manual. You will need a timing light to check the timing. Backfiring is caused by cold air being pulled into the exhaust system. Check for holes or loose connections in your exhaust.

Do you have a 1.8T or the V6?

On the 1.8T, there is not timing mark on the crank. The mark is on the harmonic balancer. The corresponding mark is on the plastic cover for the timing belt, so to get TDC, you must first install the lower timing belt cover and then install the harmonic balancer.

Looking at the manual for the V6, it appears that it is the same. The marks are on the timing belt cover and harmonic balancer.

Need timing marks ford ranger


The timing marks are on your timing belt cover. There is a little circle on the bottom right of the cover near the harmonic balancer that you can pop out to see if your distributor accesory gear is in the correct position. The camshaft has a triangle on the inside of the gear that you can line up with this accesory gear. The bottom of the timing belt cover has your timing tick marks and you may have to clean off this rectangular piece that is sticking out on the cover to see the marks. A good timing gun and remembering where the number 1 cylinder on your distributor is a good start to timing your motor. Refer to a Haynes Manual and it will give you a good guide line on how to time your motor with TDC. I hope you have good luck with this!

1991 ford ranger need a diagram


easiest thing to do is get the chilton or haynes service manual at auto stores... they break the procedure down to ensure that its done properly, they are really easy to do, you should be fine... TRIPLE check the timing marks on all pulleys before putting it all back together and starting it...
