According to Autozone.com, you must replace the whole control arm. Here is their procedure: NOTE
do not begin the removal procedure unless a new strut-to-lower arm nut, a new ball joint pinch bolt/nut and a new lower arm-to-front subframe bolt/nut are available.
Remove or disconnect the following:
Do not use a hammer to separate the ball joint from the front wheel hub and spindle.
WheelsLower arm strut nut and dished washer. Discard them.
Place the steering wheel in the unlocked position.
Do not allow the halfshaft to move outward. Over-extension of the halfshaft joint could result in separation of internal parts, causing failure of the halfshaft joint.
Remove or disconnect the following:
Use extreme care to not damage the ball joint boot seal.
Lower arm ball joint nut and pinch bolt. Discard them.Lower arm from the front wheel knuckle
Remove and discard the lower arm-to-front subframe bolt and nutRemove the lower arm from the vehicleTo install:
Install or connect the following:
Lower arm strut into the lower arm rear strut bushingLower arm into the front sub-frame bracketNew lower arm-to-front subframe nut and bolt. While holding the lower arm horizontal, tighten to 85-97 ft. lbs. (115-132 Nm).Ball joint stud-to-wheel hub and spindle, making sure that the ball stud groove is properly positioned.New lower arm ball joint pinch bolt and nut. Tighten to 46-52 ft. lbs. 62-71 Nm).
Clean the lower arm strut threads to remove dirt and contamination.
Install the dished washer with the dished side away from the lower arm rear strut bushing.
Install the front suspension lower arm strut-to-strut nut and tighten to 85-97 ft. lbs. (115-142 Nm).
The lower ball joint original is riveted into the lower control arm. If you can get to the lower control arm with a drill then the rivets can be drilled out and the joint removed . I find it quicker to remove the lower arm and do the job in a vice on the bench. Replacement ball joints will come with grade 8 bolts ( auto engineering quality) and will simply bolt into place using the holes for the rivets. So the procedure will be to jack the vehicle and place securely on jack stands. remove the wheel, remove the ball joint nut and using a ball joint removing tool drive the ball joint taper out of the support arm ( strut) Remove the inner pivot bolt ( remember to note the position of the lock washer as it is encentric and alters the wheel alignment) put the arm in a vice and carry on.
the ball joint is replaced as a lower control arm. You will need to remove the tire, remove the nut that attaches the ball joint to the knuckle, seperate the ball joint from the knuckel, remove the radius arm nut, remove the bolt that secures the lower control arm from the subframe, and then remove the control arm.
lots of things can make it "pop". check the hub bearings, the stabilizer links, the tie rod ends, the balljoints, the struts and strut mounts, the engine cradle bushings, the control arm bushings ,and the engine mounts. GOOD LUCK!
Typically these are replaced with a complete lower control arm. What happens is the ball joint is reseeding the lower control arm and rusts. When the old ones pressed out it distorts the opening in the lower control arm. When the new one is pressed in they never fit tight.
Anew lower control arm is very easy to replace.
1. Jack up the vehicle on the sub frame or pinch weld.
2. Remove the pinch bolt that holds the ball joint to the knuckle.
3. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle.
4. Remove the two bolts that secure the horizontal bushing to the sub frame.
5. Remove the single bolt that secures the vertical bushing from the subframe.
6. Remove the lower control arm.

Loosen the wheel hub nut. Remove the front road wheel and tire. Remove the tie rod end retaining nut. Using the special tool 204-192 Ball joint Splitter detach the tie rod end. Remove the subframe reinforcement plate retaining bolts. Loosen the subframe rear mount bolt. Loosen the subframe front mount bolt. Remove and discard the wheel hub nut. using spcial tools 204-269Forcing Screw,205-491-01 adapter nuts,205-491 wheel hub puller Detach the wheel knuckle. Remove the lower arm ball joint retaining bolt. Reposition the lower arm. Detach the wheel knuckle. using special tools 307-443 RH Halfshaft splitter ,307-442 RH Halfshaft splitter handle detach the halfshaft. Remove the exhaust muffler inlet pipe. Remove the halfshaft seal. Remove the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt. To prevent damage to the transfer box internal seal, make sure that the link shaft is not retracted further than 200 mm from the transfer box casing. remove the halfshaft. Attach special tools to the halfshaft. Lever the special tools to displace the halfshaft. Install the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt. Remove the halfshaft. Use suitable protective covers to protect the barshaft. Remove the halfshaft snap ring. Install a new snap ring to the halfshaft. Install a new halfshaft seal. Remove the special tool. Remove the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt. Remove the special tool. Make sure the CV joint splines are located fully. Do not use excessive force when engaging the CV joint into the link shaft. Install the halfshaft. Install the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt. Tighten to 25 Nm. Attach the wheel knuckle. Reposition the lower arm. Attach the wheel knuckle. Install the lower arm ball joint retaining bolt. Tighten to 83 Nm. Install the exhaust muffler inlet pipe. Tighten the subframe front mount retaining bolt. Tighten to 142 Nm. Loosely install the subframe rear mount retaining bolt. Install the subframe reinforcement plate retaining bolts. Tighten to 35 Nm. Tighten to 142 Nm. Install the tie rod end. Tighten to 35 Nm. Loosely install a new wheel hub nut. Install the front road wheel and tire. Tighten the wheel hub nut. Tighten to 330 Nm. Check the subframe alignment.
i have same problem the rear bolt holding the lower o/s control arm is spinning :( The bolt is inside the subframe which was supposed to be held ( welded i suppose ). Any suggestions or help on this would be appreciated :)
This is for the lower control arm:
The inner end of the lower control arm is attached to a removable crossmember. The outer end is attached to the steering knuckle pin and ball joint assembly.
Jack up the car and support it on axle stands under the subframes.
Remove the brake drum or caliper and rotor from the spindle.
Disconnect the steering arm from the knuckle pin.
Remove the lower ball joint stud cotter pin and nut.
Separate the ball joint from the knuckle pin using a ball joint removal tool.
Disconnect the sway bar from the control arm.
Unbolt the strut rod.
Remove the inner pivot bolt and the control arm. To install:
Reverse the removal procedure; do not tighten inner pivot bolt until car weight is on wheels. Tighten ball joint retaining nut to 40 ft. lbs. through 1976, 75 ft. lbs. thereafter, strut rod bolts to 75 ft. lbs., sway bar bolts to 8 ft. lbs., steering arm bolts to 65 ft. lbs. through 1979, 55 ft. lbs. thereafter, and control arm inner pivot bolt to 95 ft. lbs. through 1976, 110 ft. lbs. thereafter.
This is for the coil spring.....see if maybe you missed a step in here:
Remove the shock absorber.
Install a spring compressor through the upper spring seat opening and bolt it to the lower spring seat using the lower shock absorber mounting holes.
Remove the lower spring seat pivot retaining nuts, then tighten the compressor tool to compress the spring about 1" (25.4mm).
Jack up the front of the car and support it on axle stands at the subframe (allowing the control arms to hang free).
Remove the front wheel and pull the lower spring seat out away from the car, then slowly release the spring tension and remove the coil spring and lower spring seat. To install:
Place the spring compressor through the coil spring and tape the rubber spring cushion to the small diameter end of the spring (upper).
Place the lower spring seat against the spring with the end of the coil against the formed shoulder in the seat. The shoulder and coil end face inwards, toward the engine, when the spring is installed.
Place the spring up against the upper seat, then align the lower spring seat pivot so that the retaining studs will enter the holes in the upper control arm.
Compress the coil spring and install the spring.
Then install the wheel and tire and lower the car to the floor (to place weight on suspension).
Install and tighten lower spring seat spindle retaining nuts and tighten them to 35 ft. lbs.
Remove the spring compressor and install the shock absorber.
Please be mindful to carefully note the position of the old parts as you disassemble the suspension, then follow these steps to do the re-installation:
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
4. Remove and discard the tension strut-to-control arm nut, then pull off the dished washer.
When separating the control arm from the steering knuckle, do not use a hammer. Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot seal.
5. Remove and discard the control arm-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt. Using a small prybar, spread the pinch joint slightly, then separate the control arm from the steering knuckle. A drift punch may be used to remove the bolt, but be very careful not to damage the ball joint boot seal.
Do not allow the halfshaft to move outward, or the tripod CV-joint internal parts could separate, causing failure of the joint.
6. Remove and discard the lower control arm inner pivot bolt and nut.
7. Remove the lower control arm from the frame and the tension strut.
Make sure the front washer is at the strut-to-lower control arm attachment.
8. Insert the strut into the inner bushing.
9. Position the lower control arm into the subframe bracket, using a new nut and bolt. Tighten to 73-97 ft. lbs. (98-132 Nm).
10. Assemble the lower control arm ball joint stud to the steering knuckle, making sure the ball stud groove is positioned properly. Be very careful not to damage the lower control arm seal.
11. Insert a new pinch bolt and nut, then tighten to 40-53 ft. lbs. (53-72 Nm).
12. Clean the strut threads to remove dirt and/or debris.
13. Install the dished washer, with its dished side away from the control arm bushing. Install a new nut on the strut and tighten to 73-97 ft. lbs. (98-132 Nm).
14. Install the wheel and tire assembly, tightening the lug nuts to 85-105 ft. lbs. (115-142 Nm), then carefully lower the vehicle.
