Question about 1998 Chevrolet Blazer

Sometimes when I accelerate an awful sulfer-type odor comes from my AC vent. This happens only if AC is turned on. Despite I got it check by many AC mechanics, still the problem bothering me. Can this be Catallytic converter? But, then why is it coming only when AC is switched on and not when only fan is on??

That is sulpur dioxide. That is what the exhaust would smell like if the catalytic converter isn't doing it's job. But what if you have a leak at the exhaust manifold where it meets the exhaust. At that point is a donut shaped gasket that often leaks. If it leaks into the engine compartment your air conditioning draws fresh air from the windshield wiper well not far from it. Let's assume your weatherstrip just before the wipers is not sealing against the hood properly.

SOURCE: 2002 Astro van ventilation fan problems.

The problem is a 1/8 diameter hose that runs from the front of the engine over the top and connects at the rear of engine on the drivers side. It is a vacuum hose #GM15967970 It cost about $6.22 at your GM dealer. Hope this helps Bill. My E-Mail is Uflyups@aol.com

SOURCE: 2003 Trailblazer Air Conditioner fan runs but no air out vents

Mine does the exact same thing. If I turn it off for a few minutes it will work again for about 15 minutes. Doesn't matter which area I select the air to come out. The fan blows hard but very little air comes out.

there may be a cabine filter. but if you leave the a/c in max when you leave it overnight, condensation builds and mold can form in the vents. try leave the control in a/c normal or vent. this opens the outside air door and allows fresh air to enter and dry condensation

DTC P0480 - COOLING FAN CIRCUIT

Circuit Description

The cooling fan is controlled by PCM through the fan relay based on inputs from ECT sensor, IAT sensor, A/C selector switch, A/C refrigerant pressure switch and vehicle speed sensor. PCM controls cooling fan by grounding cooling fan control circuit which turns on cooling fan relay.

The fan relay will be commanded on when ECT reaches 223°F (106°C) or greater, A/C is requested or vehicle speed is less than 38 MPH. Cooling fan relay will also be commanded on regardless of vehicle speed when a DTC is set requesting cooling fan to be on, ECT is 304°F (151°C) or greater, or A/C refrigerant pressure is high. Cooling fan may also be commanded on when engine is not running, on certain conditions.

Conditions for setting DTC:

Battery voltage greater than 9.5 volts.

Cooling fan fault line detects a malfunction for 6 seconds.

1. Check the cooling system. Ensure coolant level and belt tension are correct. Adjust/repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 23). If no adjustment or repairs were required, go to next step.

2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, check if cooling fan is operating with ECT at less than 209°F (98°C). If cooling fan is off, go to next step. If cooling fan is on, go to step 4).

3. Command cooling fan relay on. If cooling fan operates, go to step 23). If cooling fan does not operate, go to step 5).

4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. If cooling fan turns off, go to step 23). If cooling fan does not turn off, go to step 6).

5. Disconnect cooling fan relay harness connector. Using a test light connected to ground, probe battery feed circuits in relay harness connector. If test light illuminates on both terminals, go to step 7). If test light does not illuminate on both terminals, go to step .

6. Disconnect cooling fan relay harness connector. With test light connected to ground, probe battery feed circuit in relay harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to step 9). If test light does not illuminate, go to step 10).

7. Connect a jumper wire between cooling fan relay battery feed and cooling fan battery feed circuit. If cooling fan operates, go to step 11). If cooling fan does not operate, go to step 12).

8. Repair open in battery feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 23).

9. Repair short to voltage in cooling fan battery feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 23).

10. Connect test light battery voltage and probe cooling fan control circuit. If test light illuminates, go to step 13). If test light does not illuminate, go to step 21).

11. Connect test light to battery voltage and probe cooling fan control circuit. Using scan tool, command cooling fan on. If test light illuminates, go to step 14). If test light does not illuminate, go to step 15).

12. With jumper wire still connected, disconnect cooling fan harness connector. Using test light connected to ground, probe cooling fan battery feed circuit. If test light illuminates, go to step 16). If test light does not illuminate, go to step 17).

13. Repair short to ground in cooling fan control circuit. After repairs, go to step 23).

14. Check terminals to cooling fan relay. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 23). If terminals are okay, go to step 21).

15. Check cooling fan control circuit for open or poor connection. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 23). If circuit or connection is okay, go to step 22).

16. Connect test light to battery voltage and probe cooling fan ground circuit. If test light illuminates, go to step 1. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 19).

17. Repair open or poor connection in cooling fan ignition feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 23).

18. Check for poor connections at cooling fan harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 23). If connections are okay, go to step 20).

19. Repair open or poor connection in cooling fan ground circuit. After repairs, go to step 23).

20. Replace cooling fan motor. After replacing cooling and motor, go step 23).

21. Replace cooling fan relay. After replacing relay, go to step 23).

22. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using required equipment. After replacing PCM, go to next step.

23. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Command cooling fan on. If cooling fan operates, system is okay. If cooling fan does not operate, repeat step 1).

check to see if you get this same smell when the hood is open it might be an issue in the engine compartment

Burning plastic smell when cold out run heater and fan inside car and out


Are you loosing radiator fluid. sometimes the heater core will rupture and you will smell burn odor. also check for strange rubbing sounds or screeching coming from the blower fan motor. or engine exhaust manifolds are hot when car is on, make sure nothing is leaning on them which will cause a burn odor. Any odor coming from outside will find it's way inside through the fresh air vents.

Hints for odor of oil coming through vents


The first thing most people should do is get their manual out and find out the location of the "cabin air filter". On many cars, it is behind the glove box. This is a filter that needs changed out from time to time. If you can't find it, drive to an auto shop, ask them to sell you the filter and explain to you how to find it and change it out.
Another thing that can be done for car odor is to clean the leaves off the outside vents near base of windshield, turn on AC, select fresh air (NOT recirculate) set fan at full blast, roll down windows, and spray the outside vents on both sides with Lysol. Catallytic converter might have gone bad??


What you smell is the convertor working to burn off excessive unburn fuel in the exhaust. That does not mean the cat is bad, but your engine is possibly running too rich on acceleration. If it only happens on real hard acceleration, its normal. If it happens on just normal acceleration then you may have a too rich condition witch will eventually harm the cat. Possible problems are a faulty MAF sensor, partially cloged or internally leaking injector or high fuel pressure.
Have it checked by a competant technician if its a constant problem or the check engine light comes on.

Gas odor coming through the vent when heat is on


Did you check for any gas leaks ? Check for gas leaks all over the engine. This is not supposed to happen. There is no way that the gas could get into the cooling system. The odor has to be coming from a leak or maybe the carburator (if equipped) flooded. If the odor goes away. , it may have just been too much gas to the fuel system.

Fishy, steam odor coming from AC vents


Forget the radiator tank. Your AC 'Condensate drain' hose is plugged up. This is a common problem. If you know where the hose comes out under the car you can ( carefully ) push a wire up it. If you're lucky it's plugged near the end by a mud-dauber wasp. If not, take it to your dealer and see if you can persuade the write-up guy to show you where the drain outlet is as a gesture of good faith. If they insist on charging you money, consider that when you buy your next car...
