SOURCE: Can't get tailgate to open/unlock.
I had the same problem. It could be that its locked or that the mechanism inside is jammed. There is a access panel on the other side of the tailgate. to remove it you need torx screw driver (looks like an allen wrench tip). reomve all the screws and the panel. the rods that keep the tailgate closed are connected to a plastic piece. sometimes the rod slips out, just wedge it back in and the door should open and close normally.

Probably will. The models really changed significantly in 1993. Models for 1984 to 1992 were pretty much the same. Suggest you measure everything on both to make sure. They are not hard to remover/replace.

The handle is removed by pulling the panel inside the tailgate, just below the top of it...it's held on by 6 or 8 screws. The latches on the bed itself are held on by torx head bolts, if I'm not mistaken
