I have a 1990 K5 Blazer with 350 and 700R4 tranny. Yesterday when I locked it into reverse it started grinding to the point that reverse totally went out but still grinds when you put it in gear. When I put it in drive it will not shift to 3rd gear. It would probably blow at 7K RPMS before it shifted and now you hear a small knock in the tranny when you have it in drive and accelerating. I've checked all fluids and don't really know if the problem is in the tranny or the transfer case. Any tips would help.

Grinds putting into reverse


cable bad.
cable maladjusted.
clutch dragging, bad clutch.

reverse has no synchro ring. so is first to grind.

1984 k 5 blazer 5.7ltr auto w/ overdrive. What tranny do i have? Why will it go in reverse an not in drive?


Well, that might be tough, you can google it, or crawl around and look for the casting numbers on the ****** itself. It could be a 3 speed transmission, but the exact type probly is harder. I bet its a 700R.

On a 1990 k5 blazer wires does the horn wire go from the steering colum


if the horn press in in the middle of wheel then their is a carbon brush under the steering wheel ,then wire runs into loom from around the steering lock area

My blazer is having tranny problems ,I think, Its not slipping or anything but its taking a little longer to get out of 1st gear.. people who ride with me cant notice anything but i can because ive been...


they could be related yes. The transmission fluid gets cooled by a cooler assembly that is located in the radiator. you can see the lines going into one side of the tank. If the fluid gets too hot it could brake down and become too thin which would allow it to not apply pressures enough to apply the gears in the valve body. I would fix the coolant leak flush the transmission fluid and see what happens..

PS flus the fluid by removing the line that flows fluid to the transmission cooler, start the engine and allow the transmission fluid pump to purge the fluid out of the system. once its done stop the engine and refil the system, repeat 2 times.

rebuuild it or replace it the reverse clutch pack is most likely burned out . do a visual of the fluid removed from the tranny also smell it to see if it smells burned use your senses:-) good luck

My tansmission will go into reverse, but I have no drive.. 77 k5 transmission.... can i swap with a nother tranny buy just pulling off the tailstock 6''or 9''


you can swap with another tranmission, but you cant just swap the tail housing..the output shaft will be a different legnth if the houshing is a different length....find one the measure the trans total lenght and match it up

78' k5 blazer wont shift into 2wd


You have to stop the truck and put it in natural. It should go into 2 wheel drive then. If you have lock outs make sure that they are unlocked.
