This is normal. The ECM monitors engine temperature and increases idle when it sees the engine is cold. The ECM sets the idle back to normal when engine temperature rises.

DTC P1114 - Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit Intermittent Low Voltage/IAT - B Circuit Low Input



The engine coolant temperature sensor is a thermistor (a resistor which changes value based on temperature) mounted in the engine coolant passage. Low coolant temperature produces a high resistance 100,000 ohms at -40 oC (-40 oF) while high temperature causes low resistance 70 ohms at 130 oC (266 oF).

OPERATION
The VCM supplies a 5 volt signal to the engine coolant temperature sensor through a resistor in the VCM and measures the voltage. The voltage will be high when the engine is cold. The voltage will be low when the engine is hot. By measuring the voltage, the VCM calculates the engine coolant temperature. Engine coolant temperature affects most systems the VCM controls.

The scan tool displays engine coolant temperature in degrees. After engine start-up, the temperature should rise steadily to about 9O oC (194 oF) then stabilize when thermostat opens. If the engine has not been run for several hours (overnight), the engine coolant temperature and intake air temperature displays should be close to each other. When the VCM detects a malfunction in the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor circuit, the following Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) s will set.

I have a problem with the code P0118 of my 2002 Jetta GL can you help me?


Make sure coolant level is as it should be. If level is low look for evidence of leak(s). Top off fluid if necessary. The engine coolant temperature sensor is a very common issue with these vehicles and may be the cause of your issues if no leaks are found. Also a faulty thermostat cans cause the sensors to read voltage high but most likely a sensor issue. The sensor is a potentiometer (variable resistor). The computer sends 5v through one of the wires this voltage goes through a resistor which will vary the voltage based on temperature sensed by the engine coolant temperature sensor. The sensor has a negative temparature coefficient meaning the resistance will go down when temperature is high and up when temperature is low. The less resistance the more of the 5 v gets back to the computer. The PCM detects this high voltage and set the check engine light on warning you of an issue. Whe this sensor goes bad it is usually accompanied by temperature gauge fluctuation or erratic operation and the cooling fans run long or all the time even though the vehicle is cold. - Faulty engine coolant thermostat P0118 Description The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is used to detect the engine coolant temperature. The sensor modifies a voltage signal from the Engine Control Module (ECM). The modified signal returns to the ECM as the engine coolant temperature input. The sensor uses a thermistor which is sensitive to the change in temperature. The electrical resistance of the thermistor decreases as temperature increases.

bubbles on coolant extension is the pressure produces by the high temperature when the engine heats up. pressure always finds the nearest escape. need to change engine thermostat.

  • Difficulties with starting a cold engine.
  • Starting the engine when engine is warmish or warm, idle rpm immediately is 1200 - 3000 rpm.
  • RPM at idle is irregular.
  • With all engine temperatures idle rpm will often vary between 900 - 1000 rpm.
  • With engine warm (90 °C) the engine temperature suddenly drops (70 °C) and slowly comes back to 90 °C.
  • Bad acceleration during warm-up.
  • Diesel Engines: Glow plug indicator may be on for a longer than normal time or at ambient temperatures where it shouldn't come on at all.
Possible Causes
  • The electrical signal coming from G62 is too low
  • Wiring and/or connections faulty (short circuit?)
  • Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62) faulty

Special Notes
  • In many cars between MY 1995-2002 the G2/G62 had a bad reputation for failing often. The original G2/G62 sensor is black and the improved replacements are green.

Engine temperature reading high


Faulty temperature sensor I think, thats what feeds the gauge. If the vehicle is genuinely running hot there would be a lot of pressure in your radiator causing overflows/steam/coolant smell.
Those sensos wear out and commonly go to short which shows a higher & higher reading until they fully short out
