Pull One of the Spark plugs out and connect it back into the plug wire and ground the plug to the body of car somewhere staying away from the fuel lines! While cranking it over see if the spark plug is sparking against the body. This will let you know if your getting spark or not.

I have a ford ranger 1986 ive replaced plugs, wires, coil, cap, rotor button and still i have a orange spark could it be the pickup coil

Color of spark is a kinda age-old test, but it doesnt necessarily mean anything. Some cars you will usually see orange during a cranking spark test because the resistance of the system and the coil windings reduces voltage below the "blue" spark level until voltage gets over 14v, which doesnt happen until the engine is running.

If the car runs at idle and rev, it is unlikely its the pickup coil. The pickup is the RPM sensor, pretty much it either works OK or works terribly/not at all (though sometimes they are funny, its rare). If it runs fine for awhile, then after 30 minutes it starts to cut out or stall, and when it cools it runs again, THAT is pickup coil type of failure, but not yellow spark. Pickup doesnt make spark or affect its quality in any way. It simply says WHEN to make spark. After it signals WHEN, the module and coil and source voltage determine how much is made.

If you still think you have low spark issues, id test it with a test plug. Its an adjustable or fixed gap spark plug you can buy at a parts house. You need minimum 25kv consistent spark from the coil.(30 is better). What that means is you hook a work from the cap to the spark tester, and with the engine running it will fire regular sparks and not skip any. If it does...spark is not your problem. Period. If it doesnt, then you start checking wires, resistance, voltage, etc.

I have a 98 vw jetta gl ABA and it wont start run.

I would check for spark on the ignition coil and the spark plug. If no spark, check the power and signal to the ignition coil. The ignition coil large wires are 12volts power and the other three is a signal to electronic firing circuit from ECM. Testing the power is easy, for testing for trigger signal, use a 12v LED test light.

Have a 1999 ford explorer sport 4x4, cranks want start. have replaced fuel pump, crank senser and cam senser, checked fuzes, replaced computer. doesnt seem to be firing

When you turn the key on you should beable to hear the fuel pump come on. Other than that you have a fuel pressure test port, looks just like a tire valve stem get a little probe press the valve after cranking fuel should come out strongly and not dribble out. If is doesnt seem to be firing your going to have check the coil pack for spark from the coil pack take one plug wire out and put it in a position that as you crank the vehicle you will be able to see spark jump or even hear give it a 1/4 air gap from its connection. If you dont have spark and your timing chain isnt broken you need to check for power the choice of tool is a test light.or volt meter. If you dont have either test tool we will go by sound when you turn the key on the engine fuse box has relays do you hear them click. That click noise will be fuel pump relay and PCM relay for power inpect those relays for corrode connections you mainly have a power problem and inspect for proper ground a missing ground can also cause the ECM to not fire the coils2_26_2012_7_32_43_am.gif

1985 ranger 2.8 won't start. Doesnt seem to have fire.

In the case of no spark you should check for power to the coil, Have the ignition module tested. Autozones can do this and its free.
Also make sure no vermin has chewed on any wires.

Car will not fire

Some testing will need to be done to tell you whythe car doesnt run. do you have fuel? if you have fuel is it getting to the engine? A fuel pump pressuer test will tell you if pump is good. If fuel pressure is good spark must be tested .if you have spark to the spark plugs and the engine has compression the engine will run. let me know what is lacking gas spark or compression and I can give you an idea what needs to be done.check spark at plugs with a spark tester purchase or may be loaner tool at some part stores.ask them how to use it they should be able to show you. if you have spark probably a fuel problem.ask again after testing is completed

Doesn't seem to have spark?? did you use a tester?? basic needs, spark tester(in line works best) fuel pressure guage, injector signal tester(noid light) and finally compression guage, rad tester optional, check spark and injector signal, the remove spark plugs and note their color, do a compression test, all cylinders should read within 10 percent, lo compression on one or two indicate head gasket, no compression timing belt, have fun
