Abs warning light on citroen c1 55 plate comes on mainly on bumpy surfaces. Have had diagnostic readings and two error message show up- WHEEL SPEED and ABS Pump error. Any suggestions

The bearings on the wheels has to be installed one way only, the rotor ring is built into the bearing and if installed the wrong way round the sensor cant pick up the wheel speed causing the ligt to be switched on in the cluster. The diagnostic equipment should pick this up as a fault once the car has been driven, it will see the sensor when you do the diagnostic if the car is standing still but once the car is moving and no signal is send from that wheel it would register a fault into the memory of the PCM that you would be able to retrieve later.
There is a way for you to test the sensor yourself by using a multimeter set on volts, you jack the vehicle up at that wheel, install a vehicle stand to support the vehicle to be safe, disconect the wheel speed sensor and probe the two wires into the sensor, spin the wheel by hand and a small amount of current will be produced meaning the the sensor is working and the wheel bearing is installed the correct way, you can also do a continuaty test on the sensor by switching the multimeter onto ohms, but be very carefull, if this sensor has three wires you cant do the continuaty test because of the integrated circuit in the sensor, the three wire sensors opperate on a voltage from 5Volt and it would be destroyed by the multimeter opperating on 9Volt.
If the continuaty test passes and the bearing is installed the correct way, the most comon fault would be a break in the wiring leading to the PCM

Hi Liz, I am in exacty the same position as you although I just had the new abs pump fitted and I still have the same problems??? I am going crazy with this, my garage's diagnostic machine won't commuicate with my car and my speedo is not working? My mechanic reckons the abs memory is stuck in a loop and that is why the lights ain't going out, but without a diagnostic I dont know, I guess I will have to take it to a dealership to be ripped off!!!!

speed reading may be a bad vehicle speed sensor or broken / disconnected wire to that sensor ~ it should also light up your check engine light ~ confirm by using a scanner to get a trouble code

PRE-DIAGNOSTIC INSPECTIONBefore diagnosing ABS/TCS, perform a comprehensive visual inspection of system as follows.Check ABS/TCS wiring harness connectors for looseness. Check harness routing; pay particular attention to wheel speed sensor wiring harness routing. Check fuses No. 1D, 5B and 6B in instrument panel fuse block. Check fuses No. 1 and 2 in underhood fuse block. Check brake fluid level in master cylinder reservoir. Check brake fluid level in Pressure Modulator Valve (PMV) assembly reservoir. Why would engine light,cruise control and abs light come on?


hello,do post your DTC'S,(diagnostic trouble codes) and may be i can help.many modern vehicles spring up a multitude of warning icon's on the dashboard,much to the alarm of it's owner,however,often it can be as simple as a dirty wheel speed sensor,which fails to provide the necessary information to the main (ABS/TRACTION control unit) and so then will inhibit the cruise control,as naturally it's unable to ascertain road wheel speed,and also throw up the engine management light,as the braking/traction control systems unable to supply correct information to the main engine computer(ECU,OR PCM) electronic control unit/power control module. hope this helps,but please supply any further information that you can,regarding your DTC'S, that are read out,try to get a full print off,if at all possible, cheers.

one of your wheel speed sensors is reading slightly incorrect (showing at stop when first start to move) causing traction control to engauge. if you have a scan tool to read abs (EBCM) let off brake slowly and watch for a wheel speed sensor that does not show movement at the same time as others. remove rust from that sensor mounting surface or replace that hub/sensor assemble to correct your problem.

Abs on vr commodore light stays on solutions


Error logs are a great thing. They will help you find intermittent problems and start you off in a general direction of where a problem could be. There is a great level of detail on the justcommodores site on checking error codes logged by the engine management system, but this does not detail anything about the abs system. The abs warning light is not as common as the check engine warning light. Reading through the posts, I haven't found any detail on checking error codes logged by the abs system.

So here it is. For those of you familiar with checking the engine error codes, this procedure is so simple its not funny.

Basically, to check the engine error log, you bridge the 5th (ground) and 6th pins in the ODB connector under the steering wheel.

To check the ABS error log, using the same trusty calibrated paper clip, you simply bridge pins 5 and 12 of the connector.

To find pins 5 and 12, start at the top left hand corner. That is pin one. Going to the right, you count pin 2,3,4 etc. Once you get to the end, jump back to the start of the bottom left level of pins and keep counting. Pin 5 is about halfway along the top row, pin 12 is a little left of the middle in the bottom row.

Reading the error codes is the same procedure (counting the flashes), except now, the ABS light flashes (as opposed to the engine light when checking the engine codes).

The ABS log also uses code 12 firstly, with any errors logged shown after that. If no errors are logged, the 12 will flash again.

Error codes for the ABS error log (VR/VS) are as follows:

12 Diagnostic system operational
21 Right hand front wheel speed sensor fault
23 Right hand front wheel speed sensor continuity fault
25 Left hand front wheel speed sensor fault
27 Left hand front wheel speed sensor continuity fault
28 Wheel speed sensor frequency error
31 Right hand rear wheel speed sensor fault
33 Right hand rear wheel speed sensor continuity fault
35 Left hand rear wheel speed sensor fault
37 Left hand rear wheel speed sensor continuity fault
41 Right hand front inlet solenoid valve circuit fault
42 Right hand front outlet solenoid valve circuit fault
45 Left hand front inlet solenoid valve circuit fault
46 Left hand front outlet solenoid valve circuit fault
55 Rear inlet solenoid valve circuit fault
56 Rear outlet solenoid valve circuit fault
61 Pump motor relay circuit fault
63 Valve relay circuit fault
71 ABS control module internal fault

The above guide has been verified on a VR/VS. Checking the error log on all models prior to VR/VS is the same for the engine log, and I would assume that the same can be said for the ABS log, would be happy if someone could verify this for me.

Hi guys my abs, esp, handbrake and stop lights have just come on. My diagnostic tool reads P0500 and vehicle speed sensor "A". On a renault megane 225. What is the meaning of this. Is the code referri


The ABS (anti lock braking system) requires wheel speed sensors to operate. When one of the wheel speed sensors fails you will get an ABS warning light appear and it will not disappear until you have fixed the problem - in this case replaced the faulty sensor(s).

It is not a DIY job so do not attempt to do it yourself when you do not know what you are doing.

I have a 2002 VW New Beetle. The ABS light has come on and there is a chiming beep and the ABS light flickers. What could be the problem?


ABS - Anti-lock Brake System.
If the ABS lights on the dashboard permanently the ABS system is faulty. You must access the ABS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory for pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car. Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by ABS ECU, in other words reset the ABS system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard.
ASR - Acceleration Skid Control system.
When ASR warning light blinking the system is activated itself for car acceleration skid control.

For today's typical high-torque engines, traction control (ASR) can increase both comfort and safety, particularly when driving on slippery roads or surfaces offering differing levels of grip. Traction control permits smooth starting and acceleration through the full speed range without wheel-spin or fishtailing.

ASR only operates in conjunction with the electronic accelerator (E-gas) and uses components of the anti-lock braking system (ABS). If one wheel suddenly begins to rotate faster than the others (slip), ASR intervenes in the engine management system and reduces power until the wheel stops spinning.
The ASR system represents a further contribution to active safety as it maintains vehicle traction and directional stability throughout the acceleration phase at any speed. In addition, it reduces tyre wear. Activation of the ASR system is indicated by a flashing indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.
The ESP system means the Electronic Stability Program. ESP system includes the ABS system.

Could be a fuse or a wheel speed sensor; next, check the tone rings on the axle shafts and see if they are not broken.

The amber ABS warning lamp is located in the instrument cluster. It is used to inform the driver that the antilock function has been turned off due to a system malfunction. The warning lamp is controlled by the CAB and/or the main relay through an in-harness diode. The CAB controls the lamp by directly grounding the circuit. The main relay grounds the lamp circuit when it is de-energized.
The re BRAKE warning lamp is located in the instrument cluster. It can be activated by application of the parking brake or leak in the front or rear wheel brake hydraulic circuit.
The antilock brake controller (CAB) is a microprocessor-base device that monitors wheel speeds and controls the anttlock function.
The primary functions of the CAB are:
- monitor wheel speeds
- detect wheel locking tendencies
- control fluid pressure modulation to the brakes during antilock stop operation
- monitor the system for proper operation
- provide communication to the DRB while in diagnostic mode
- store diagnostic information in non-volatile memory
The CAB continuously monitors the speed of each wheel. When a wheel locking tendency is detected, the CAB will command the appropriate valve to modulate brake fluid pressure in its hydraulic unit. Brake pedal position is maintained during an antilock stop by being a closed system with the use of 3 accumulators. The CAB continues to control pressure in individual hydraulic circuits until a wheel locking tendency is no longer present. The CAB turns on the pump/motor during an antilock stop.
The antilock brake system is constantly monitored by the CAB for proper operation. If the CAB detects a system malfunction, it can disable the antilock system and turn on the antilock warning lamp. If the antilock function is disabled, the system will revert to standard base brake system operation.
The CAB inputs include the following:
- four wheel speed sensors
- stop lamp switch
- ignition switch
- main relay voltage
- pump/motor relay output
- diagnostic communication ISO/K
- G switch (acceleration switch)
The ABS main relay is located in the power distribution center (PDC). The main relay has two functions. First, when the relay is energized, it supplies power to the valve/solenoids in the valve block assembly and the pump/motor relay coil. Second, when the relay is de-energized, it supplies a ground to turn on the ABS warning lamp. The main relay is controlled by the CAB. The CAB energizes the main relay when it receives an ignition input signal.
The ABS pump/motor relay supplies power to the pump/motor. It is also located in the PDC. The relay coil is powered by the main relay and the coil ground is controlled by the CAB. The pump/motor relay is a special five-terminal relay and should not be replaced with a standard relay.
One wheel speed sensor (WSS) is located at each wheel and sends a small AC signal to the control module (CAB). This voltage is generated by magnetic induction when a toothed sensor ring (tone wheel) passes by a stationary magnetic sensor (wheel speed sensor). The CAB converts the AC signals into digital signals for each wheel.
The front wheel speed sensor air gap is NOT adjustable. The correct front wheel speed sensor air gap is from 0.40mm to 1.3mm. Preferred rear sensor air gap for drum brake systems is 1.1mm. Acceptable air gap range is 0.92mm to 1.275mm. For rear disc brake systems, the preferred rear sensor air gap is 1.2mm. Acceptable air gap range is 0.95mm to 1.45mm. All wheel speed sensors have a resistance between 900 and 1300 ohms.
Correct antilock system operation is dependent on tone wheel speed signals from the wheel speed sensors. The vehicle's wheels and tires should all be inflated to the recommended pressures for optimum system operation. Variations in wheel and tire size or significant variations in inflation pressure can produce inaccurate wheel speed signals; however, the system will continue to function when using the mini-spare. When driven over rough road surfaces, the rear wheel speed sensor signals may be erratic and cause a false trouble code (drum brakes only).
Diagnostic trouble codes are retained in memory until erased using the DRB, or automatically erased after 50 key cycles.
Ensure you are using a DRBIII scan tool properly connected to the data link connector located under the dash to the right of the steering column.
Select "Anti-lock Brakes" the "Teves ABS". Turn the ignition on.
Read and record all ABS diagnostic trouble codes. If the "Valve Power Feed Circuit" trouble code is present, it must be repaired before prior to addressing any other DTCs.
If there are no trouble codes present, select "Inputs/Outputs" and read the brake switch input as you press and release the brake pedal. If the display does not match the state of the pedal, check for 8 volts at the brake lamp switch output circuit. If the voltage is not present, repair the open brake lamp switch output circuit. If the voltage is present, replace the CAB.
If the display does match the state of the pedal, read the "G-Switch" status, with the vehicle on a level surface, both switches should read "CLOSED". If the status is not correct, make sure the G-Switch is properly mounted and connected (under the driver's side rear seat). If it looks correct, you'll have to check for voltage to the G-Switch.

DIAGNOSTICS
When the ignition is turned on, the ABS controller receives a "wake-up" call and illuminates the warning lamps for a few seconds to check the bulbs. It also checks continuity with all four wheel-speed sensors, and checks its own internal software. If any problems are detected, a fault code is stored in memory and the ABS system is disabled.
If a hard fault is detected while the vehicle is being driven, a fault code will be stored in memory, the ABS warning lamp will come on and the ABS system will be disabled.
To diagnose the system, a scan tool is required (DRB III or equivalent). Fault codes are displayed as messages on the tool. Each message will indicate a particular circuit or component. You must then refer to the appropriate diagnostic chart in a service manual to isolate the faulty component in the circuit or confirm the fault.
