SOURCE: Where is the DPFE Sensor located on a 2003 Ford

That is the (Differential Pressure Feedback Exhaust) - e.g. EGR Valve. You shouldn't have any trouble finding it. There is usually a metal tube from the exhaust manifold going to it,as well as one or two vacuum hoses.
It has to also, direct exhaust gas into the intake,so there is your key.

If so it will be on the drivers side of the engine. Look for the metal tube that goes into the upper plenum just behind the throttle body. Follow that metal tube and you will see to hoses coming off from it. Follow the hoses up to the DPFE sensor.

It is common for the sensors to stick at a certain voltage. With them unplugged the Computer should default a value of around 5 volts. With it plugged in the voltage should be around 1 volt (key on engine off). Voltage should increase as EGR flow increases. You can supply vacuum to the EGR valve with the engine running. If the engine stalls the EGR is working and the DPFE is most likely bad. If it doesn't the EGR is not working and the DPFE is not your problem.

Also make sure you check the two hoses carefully. They do get old and crack/burn out. If they are leaking the sensor will not be able to sense EGR flow accurately.

97% of the time it is the DPFE sensor. The other 3% are bad hoses, EGR, wiring, etc.

The EGR is on the Differential Pressure FEedback system. The EGR is located on top middle of the backside of the engine It is round and has a hose attached to it.

I have a tropubleshooting code of P1405. On a ford Expedition 5.4l. Where do i fine the DPFE sensor (DPFE sensor upstream hose off or plugged.. aaECM detected EGR flow in a negative direction with aan


DPFE sensor failures are VERY COMMON on Ford vehicles. However, clogged EGR ports are also very common on 5.4L Ford engines. The DPFE sensor is located on the left side of the engine. It connects to two silicone rubber hoses that connect to the steel EGR tube coming from the back of the engine to the EGR valve. (See picture of the sensor below)

Another common failure is a DPFE sensor that has melted due to excessive exhaust back-pressure. If you find the DPFE sensor melted, suspect a restricted exhaust. (smashed tailpipe, clogged catalytic converter, etc..)

Where is the dpfe sensor located on the 2000 ford taurus?


I had to replace the dpfe sensor on my 2000 Ford Explorer and they should be the same.
Mine was located on the left side of the engine (facing the engine with the hood up) above the valve cover. It will have two 3/8" vacuum lines going into it and a plug ended cable. Very simple to replace.

Code 402 and 403 having to do with egr and dpfe sensor. Were are they located?


Dpfe sensor is usually on driver side intake manifold or on a bracket attached to it. It has 2 vacuum ports & a electrical plug. Look for cracked or broken vauum hoses going to it. I would fix any broken vacuum hoses, if none change the dpfe sensor(aka:egr position sensor) only & it will usually cure both codes.

The DPFE sensor has failed on you egr system .Replace just this part and don't let someone sell you a egr valve .The sensor is about$70 and faily easy to do .:)

Here is a list of possible causes for a PO401, hope this helps.

  • DPFE sensor signal circuit is shorted to ground
  • DPFE sensor VREF circuit is open between sensor and PCM
  • DPFE sensor downstream hose off or plugged
  • DPFE sensor hoses both off, loose or damaged
  • DPFE sensor hoses connected wrong (reversed)
  • EGR orifice tube is damaged or restricted
  • PCM has failed
