Sounds like the shift linkage is out of sync with the shifter, there is an adjustment on the transmission and some have an adjustment under the console as well

Its Whats Known As Linkage Its Very Easy To Fix But you'll Need The Manual. Its What Aligns The Transmission And The Reading You See On The Dash Or On The Console. You Can Take It To A Repair Shop And Likely It Will Be About $20.00

check your ****** fluid level. if that isnt low then you may have a synchrode going out in your ****** and may need a rebuild or in most cases a new ******
