Sounds like the engine seized up due to loss of oil pressure or other issue

    what's the solution to it?

  • Kelly Oct 17, 2013

The solution would be to replace or rebuild the engine, it's usually cheaper to buy a used engine than it is to rebuild one that's been seized

I was hoping that was not the answer. When the tow truck driver jumped it, it trued to start but wouldn't kick over. They did grab a P0404 code off it.

The engine turned over with a jump? If so its not seized

  • Kelly Oct 17, 2013

If the engine still turns over but won't start, and with the code that was provided, you will need to check the catalytic convertor, anc the egr valve (exhaust gas recirculation) a clogged catalytic convertor would be my first step

I hope & pray that is all that it is. I talked to my mechanic and he tried to try to jump the battery, but it wasn't taking it. As I described, it wants to start, it cranks & jumps but doesn't turn over. Thanks for all the advice. I appreciate it. It is keeping me sane.

Ok, great, so start with the catalytic convertor and egr, if those are both good, have the timing checked, if the timing belt jumped then replacing the timing belt will fix the problem, and you're very welcome

I just kept looking over my previous posts and kept saying to myself "oh, I forgot to say this...or I forgot to say that!" Just making sure that I give you the whole picture. Sometimes when you get flustered, you leave out details.

That's great, the more info you provide, the better answers I can provide, and together we can find the cause of the problem..

Whatever happened, the engine computer sensed it and turned on the light. You will have to have the computer scanned for the trouble codes- a tech or mechanic could then follow the codes to find the problem.

Had that problem with a Dakota about the same year. No check engine lights or anything. Had no power wouldn't rev up. Turned out the catalytic converter was clogged & the truck couldn't breath when it was trying to push out too much exhaust. Hope this helps, let us know how it turns out.

I started it I put gas and it smelled like a burnt metal smell and I turned off then it wouldn't start. When it finally did start I couldn't shift past 2nd gear. I was already low on oil.

Yup! Running it low on oil can definitely cause a "burnt metal smell". It can also totally destroy the engine before you can ever smell it.

It sounds like something that needs to be checked by a professional auto repair technician to me.

A light on dash with a wrench next to a cup with a drop of liquid.

That is your computer's determination that it's time to change the oil. It will do that from time to time.
Want to turn the light off???
Do this....Turn key to ON, and depress the accelerator pedal to the floor 3 times within 10 seconds.
The oil change light will flash several times and then go off. Turn key off, and then start engine. the light should be off now.

When the alternator doesn't supply current, the battery light on the dash would light up. (assuming the battery lightbulb is working) Next would be to doubt the voltage regulator not doing a proper job, but usually its either dead or working.

Ghost consumers can be tracked when the engine is off and removing / attaching the battery lead causes quite a bit of spark. Measure the Amps with a multimeter when turned off. When it's in the 2 Amps and upwards region - remove one fuse group after the other to see where most of it goes. Then go through all the separate consumers in that group.

If it's a low current preferably below the 1 Amp - the battery might not be as healthy anymore as suspected.

You may be losing the speedo cable. Others have reported the light flashing related to this. You may also want to check tranny oil condition (color should be clear red, and smell should not have a burnt smell to it)...
