Question about 1998 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

1 Answer

Ever so often, my 98 S10 will simply not start. It will start 97 times out of 100. Someone said it was probably the clutch starter safety switch. Well, I bought one, but am not sure how to install it.

The clutch switch is located near the clutch pedal. Depress the locking prongs and it should come right out. Unplug from wiring, plug in new switch, insert new switch in old bracket. Done.

check you ignition switch, it also could be the starter module

could be neutral safety switch or passlock system. Try resetting the system by leaving the key in the ignition for 10 minutes before trying to start.

1996 pathfinder, ignition issue, starter , battery , ignition tested, will start 100 times, then just won't, then start right up! And keep starting. Last time had it towed home, started right up.Help!

If the Pathfinder is a manual trans. Your clutch safety switch needs to be adjusted. if it is automatic, then neutral safety switch is the problem. Try shifting from Park to Neutral position on the gear selector and try starting. Check for low voltage at the starter solenoid (small Black Wire with White stripe ) You have to unbolt the right motor mount and jack the engine up to remove the starter. test so that starter is last resort. Hit me up at and I can tell you how to test the starter.

My 98 s10 manual transmission wont wont rotate when attempting to start but will start when i slam it in to 2nd gear and ideas?

Your starter safety switch is likely to be bad. It is located on the firewall behind the clutch or attached to the clutch upper arm.

The clutch safety switch behind peddle seems to need replacement.

of course!...however you do not want to bypass this safety switch! bypassing it will allow a car in gear to start...possibly running over and/or killing someone! get a cheap switch at a salvage yard!

97 chevy s10 wont start

Then the problem is likely the ignition switch, or the neutral safety switch. Try jamming it into park a couple of times to see if it helps. If it does, you will need to change the neutral safety. If it doesnt, probably going to need an ignition switch. Those trucks, jimmys, and blazers are famous for ignition switch problems.

as it has a clutch... have you tried push starting it. if it won't start with a push start there is a chance the motor is seized

My '98 S10 ignition switch will click, then work.

first check all cables for corrosion on the battery. then go under the truck and check all cables that are on the starter. if they are clean then replace the starter because the solenoid is going bad.

96 rodeo not getting power to starter

My first check would be the ignition switch, take a volmeter lead to the solenoid lead and the other to chassis or negative lead of the battery,no volmeter you can use a 12v test light, and have someone turn the key as to start it,you should get a 12v reading,if not the ignition switch is probably bad

My 1998 s10 2.2 truck will not start

-If the starter is only clicking or it is acting as if the clutch pedal was never pushed down- it is either one two things, (1) the click, click sound may be due to a bad battery connection or bad wire contact to the starter motor. (2) the neutral saftey switch which is attached to the clutch master cylinder on the inside of the vehicle, (under the dash) is deffective or needs adjusting-it is easier to simply replace it., no complex tools are needed for either repair, just a voltmeter to check wire connections on the battery to starter motor, or a small screwdriver driven socket to remove the screws holding the lower part of the dash together (below the steering column)- I hope this was helpful, I ran into a lot of problems after I swapped an engine and rebuilt the transmission on my 98 s10 but I eventually worked most of the problems out.
