SOURCE: cat converters
yes sir they are about right. I have had both of my CAT CONV replaced. The 1st was under warranty. There is a 8yr/80000, mile warranty with the dealer. So I did not have to pay anything for that. The second one was replaced recently at Precision Tune. That was a bout a grand just for the CAT CONV and labor. I had called the mazda dealer and they confirmed as well. So yes we do have two and they do cost about a grand a piece.

Technically, you can put the car in neutral and press the gas while the car is running, til it reaches 3500 rpm. You don't have to actually have the car on the road while you do this.

SOURCE: Po431 code came up as
Hi, basically this means that the oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter on bank 2 is detecting that the converter is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.
A code P0431 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* The catalytic converter is no longer functioning properly
* An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
* There is an exhaust leak
Inspect for exhaust leaks. Next step is to measure the voltage at the oxygen sensor on Bank 2. In fact, it would be a good idea to test each oxygen O2 sensor while you're at it.
