Question about 1983 Cadillac DeVille

1 Answer

I came to this project in the middle so I am not sure this a pre existing problem. What I have is a left turn signal very dim while the right is normal, gas gauge shows over a quarter full yet the low fuel light stays on. Turns signals work all bulbs function but the dash left signal is very dim. They replaced the fuel tank and sending unit, although as stated prior I don't know if this problem existed before or maybe a ground somewhere is loose or missing. This vehicle is a 1983 Cadillac coupe Deville Brougham. If you can help I would appreciate it. Thank You

Check the front and rear turn signals on the left. If both are just as bright as the right turn signals, then the dim bulb is isolated just to the dash. Possibly someone replaced the bulb at one time with the wrong rated bulb. A steady dim bulb doesn't sound like a loose ground. It would probably be going in and out or flickering, and just that one side would not have a separate ground. High resistance in a wire (like broken strands)or a connection could cut the current and cause a dim bulb. If the whole left side is dim, both the dash and the signaling bulbs, start looking for high resistance in that side of the circuit. To thoroughly check it out, probably need a volt meter

the problem is caused by a defective gas gauge sending unit, this part is located inside the gas tank, you must remove the gas tank to replace it.

SOURCE: 1992 Cadillac Brougham 5.0 L V8 RWD, turn signal don't work.

The turn signal switch is most likely the problem, but change the flasher for the turn signals first, some times this is all that it is.

1996 3500 sierra left signal causes all lights to flash

Well, you're dealing with a short. If the right turn signal only works the right side bulbs, you know you're issue must be in the switch. The only way left turn signal would light the right side, but the right signal would not light the left is if you added a diode, which I doubt is the case. So the switch itself is suspect. That or a wiring issue. If you just bought the truck, and this is an existing issue I'd suspect wiring. If it just started doing this I'd suspect the switch.

I would check to make sure someone didn't monkey with the wires and switch the left turn signal with the hazard lights or something (do your hazard lights happen to flash only the left turn signals?). If it has or had an aftermarket alarm you need to check their work and see what may be screwed up. Alarm systems often tap into the parking lights, which will look like all 4 turn signals, but are actually dimmer filaments. Flashing the parking lights would actually make your radio flash too, so I'm kind of leaning this way. Can't say for sure on limited information though.

When I activate turn signal in ether direction the other side signal also activates but is dim. 2000 Monte Carlo .

you have loose wiring under the hood that is touching a ground, make sure to cover up any wiring that is exposed under the hood, check out your left/right wiring for signals. that should fix the problem.

The ground for the right signal is bad. You either need to clean the bulb sockets, or run a new ground wire to them.

1966 chevy turn signal does not work

check the light socket and the wires leading to the socket. The contacts inside are probably nasty looking green or have a white powdery looking corrosion on them, also check to make sure the bulb fits in the socket properly,it could just be worn out.The switch in the column could also have a bad or broken contact, but start with the simple stuff first.

2001 S60 Right Turn Signal Blinks Rapidly compared to Left Signal

Gregg -

I had the same problem. It was a defective lamp socket on the driver's left side, Volvo Part Number 8662985. Costs me $11.24 to replace the lamp socket, which included the bulb. If you've already replaced the bulbs yourself, you will find replacing the socket pretty easy, just use a thin flathead screwdriver to delicately pry off the metal retainer clip which holds the lamp socket in place, as you'll need to reinstall the existing metal retainer clip once you've replaced the lamp socket. Two minute job.

DASH LIGHTS DIM WHEN BRAKE OR LEFT BLINKER APPLIED

Pull the bulb out of both left side turn signals and check the filaments. As these are double filament bulbs, sometimes the filaments break and lay across the other creating a feedback issue.
