My Pontiac grand am will not stop overheating. I have already replaced the thermostat and flushed out the radiator. It has a pulse in the hose that runs from the radiator to the thermostat and boils out of the over flow on the reservoir

Check your engine oil for water and water for oil your head gasket may have blown. failing that the water pump has gone and not pumping the water round. with engine running you should feel the water round if you squeeze the pipe near to the thermostat.

Overheating


Most common reason for overheating is 1. low coolent lvl 2. faulty thermostat (stuck closed). 3. Faulty water pump preventing coolent from circulating through engine.

Check coolent lvl in radiator when engine is cool by removing the cap and filling it up till you can see the coolent, replace cap and try. If you have the proper lvl of coolent. Replace your thermostat, which is located under the thermostat housing (right underneith where your top radiator hose connects). Fill with coolent and see if that helps. Next test is to start the car and let it run till it gets to normal operating temp or near (180 to 220 degrees F) Pinch your upper radiator hose and see if you can feel a gush, or flow of water rush through the hose when you release your pinch hold on the hose, (by pinch, I mean to try and totally squeeze the hose together) If you don't feel the rush of coolent through the hose, then your waterpump is faulty. If your car quits overheating, but your heater hoses don't get hot, then they are probably stopped up at the point where they connect to the engine. Its a common area for gunk, rust, and corrosion to build up.

Hi Eric, Before you back flush have the pressure radiator cap inspected together with the cooling fan operation. A defect there will result in over heating. To back flush, detach the cabin heater pipes and open the radiator return pipe and adjust the cabin climate control to fully hot. Attach a hose pipe so that water runs opposite to the normal circulation and turn on the flow. Afterwards when refilling remember to open the air bleeder, replace coolant and run water into the system until all air is expelled from the system. Close up and test run. Keep in mind that air in the cooling system will also cause overheating. Regards John

drain coolant system locate heater cores hoses going through firewall you need to buy the radiator flush kit at any auto parts stores. remove heater cores hoses from one end or buy extra long heater hoses same size as heater core hoses in vechicle at auto parts store use the flush kit when you flush through one of the heater core hoses let the other hose drain in a drain pan when you use home garden hose use low water pressure dont use garden hose to the max or you will rupture heater core. your best bet let radiator shop flush whole coolant system. because heater cores hoses are in a tight spot.make sure engine off if you just going to flush out heater core only .after flushing heater core good time to replace heater core hoses.if job too hard or complicated let radiator shop flush out radiator the engine block and heater core because if radiator stopped up or engine block stopped up the gunk and rust will reenter plug up heater core.if you tight on money you can flush out your own radiator.drain out radiator using large drain pan. remove top radiator hose and remove bottom radiator hoses connect to water pump.use garden hose with flush kit part with water pressure not too high put garden hose to top radiator hose run water until clear water run out bottom radiator hose in drain pan,the flush out engine block remove thermostat.if you had another spare thermostat housing with RTV SILICONE SEALANT THAT HAS SET UP INSTALL THERMOSTAT HOUSING BACK TO ENGINE WITHOUT THERMOSTAT FLUSH OUT THE ENGINE BLOCK, WHEN DONE INSTALL NEW THERMOSTAT THEN INSTALL ORIGINAL THERMOSTAT HOUSING WITH NEW ORING WHICH YOU BUY AT DEALERSHIP.IF ALL SOUND COMPLICATED LET RADIATOR SHOP FLUSH OUT COOLANT SYSTEM.

does the upper and lower hoses seem to be the same temp when car begins to overheat? ore the radiator cooling fans coming on before the car overheats? did you pressure test the cooling system and radiator cap? also may want to remove the lower hose and flush the radiator. is the check engine light on and does it run bad?

First check that the thermostat was installed correctly. It will not work properly if it was installed upside down. If this is the original radiator, it most likely is plugged up with deposits and corrosion. It needs to be replaced with a new one.

My 02 Grand am V6 keeps blowing up all my water hoeses. it even cracked my radiator. it doesnt over heat until it brakes a hoes.


you got a restriction in engine block.its full of rust.flush block out by taking the thermostat out.remove the top hose to thermostat then move lower hose to water pump .place a container so the lower hose can catch the water as you flush out block with water hose.flush from the top where thermostat goes flush until you get a good stream of water from bottom is clear.before you start this procedure drain out antifreeze first. flush out over flow jug make sure its not stop up. and change the radiator pressure cap.

remove coolant.remove thermostat remove bottom radiator hose to water pump.put a empty container under the radiator.take a water hose put it where thermostat goes flush out the rust in block.watch the water as it come out the water pump .if stream water is small keep flushing until you get a study sream of clear water. also flush out radiator. lower water pressure dont flush radiator it with high water pressure you could burst it. make clean the over flow jug .make sure it not stopped up.put in a new thermostat and radiator pressure cap. fill radiator with half antifreeze and half water.bleed the coolant system.

There could be several reasons that may cause an engine to overheat. It sounds like you have covered the most important ones. Thermostat,radiator and water pump. Hopefully you do not have internal damage, cracked head, head gasket, or a cracked block. I would try flushing the heater core and pay close attention to what comes out. You know, is it clogged with stop leak or rust. Then while I was flushing that I would drain the entire system and put in some Prestone super radiator flush. You just add plain water with it and run your vehicle for about 10 minutes. You then empty your cooliant system and refill with antifreeze. The flush works pretty well and if there is an obstruction from a previous owner putting stop leak in the system it generally will clean it out.
BTW, are you sure the thermostat is in properly? Not upside down? I think I would start there before I went through all of the work of flushing the system. It actually sounds like from everything you've done already, that's possible. Hey it does happen once in awhile. Was this car overheating when you bought it? If so, maybe the previous owner put it in upside down, and when you changed it put it in the same way by accident.

Engine overheating


The best way to flush it would be to take off the bottom radiator hose and pump water through the fill nozzle after all the coolent is out you can then hook the hose back up and replace it with new coolant.
