Spray the intake with carb cleaner to find the vacuum leak. Check where the EGR mounts and the throttle body gasket sense you had both off.

SOURCE: 1989 GMC 2500 5.7L - engine surges and stalls at idle. Loses power at cruising speed.

Wow you have replaced a lot of stuff. Lets go back to the Fuel pump. When you replaced it did you replace the hose between the pump and the sending unit. These are common for splitting. Have you hooked up a fuel pressure gauge to check what pressure you have? It should be real close to 13 psi and should raise to at least 18 or 19 when you pinch off the return line.

SOURCE: my 79 Chevy has rough idle/miss at idle but runs fine otherwise

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak or a carburetor problem. Check all hoses and the line going to the brake booster for cracks or leaks. Make sure the carb bolts are tight at the manifold. You can check for leaks using some carb cleaner. Spray around the base of carb while the engine is running, any leak will cause the engine to sputter when the spray hits it. You may want to look into rebuilding the carb or replace it. If its the original its a Quadrajet, they are not the easiest to rebuild but not impossible. If you rebuild it yourself, make sure to get the numbers off the carb so you can get the correct rebuild kit and accelerator pump. Plus you should replace the float when you rebuild since its 30 years old. A thorough cleaning of the carb is crucial before rebuilding. The fuel mixture screws have caps on them so they wont be altered after assembly from the factory. You'll have to remove those caps to remove these screws before cleaning. You can probably find some good info. on doing this at a good parts store. I hope this helps you.

Rough idle 95 astro van, I did a full tune up , plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, and fuel filter and cleaned egr vavle.

I actually had to replace my EGR valve and the gasket. I clean the valve well and reused both. I don't think the gasket sealed well enough though. So I went ahead and got a new valve, gasket and changed them. It runs a lot smoother now.

MAKE SURE THE MAF plug is properly connected at the air filter housing- then check the idle air control motor assy. on the throttle body. Then remove and clean your dirty EGR valve- which is stuck open and allowing EGR at idle...which is not supposed to happen...

Everytime you turn the steering wheel it shuts itself off; why? almost everytime that is. He's changed the steering column and it still does it. Does anyone know why and how to fix it?

the power stering pump, when turning, puts a load on the engine. the rpm must be maintained when this occurs. idle control circuits must be inspected. ensure spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor are in good shape. perform a tune up if it has not been done in a while. typically 20,000-30,000 miles. check the egr system. a partially open egr valve could cause low rpm. change the air filter if dirty. check the fuel pressure for proper psi.

Perform a valve clearance inspection and adjust if necessary. Tight or sticking valves will cause a misfire or rough running concern. Note: Perform valve adjustment when the engine is stone cold. 4cyl: INT 0.26mm EXH: 0.30mm (V6 engine are hydraulic and no adjust necessary.) Also check for a sticking or stuck open EGR valve. For diagnostic purposes only: Remove the EGR valve. Place a business card over the EGR passage and bolt the EGR valve back on. This plugs the EGR ports and if the misfire goes away the EGR valve is partially stuck open and is defective.
Check for low fuel pressure. Check for low compression. Check cam timing. Check for a weak ignition coil. Also don't over look the possibility of worn or broken engine mounts which cause excessive engine movement and engine vibration. -hope this helps

Check the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator and check to see if the fuel pressure regulator has gone bad. Give the throttle body a good cleaning and the injectors too. Do not use carb cleaner, it's to corrosive for the gaskets used in the throttle body. The other thing too that would cause this is a stuck or bad EGR valve, Try cleaning the EGR valve too since your cleaning the throttle body. Good luck and keep me posted.
