Have you checked the fuse in the fuse box side lights have a fuse.

Very difficult. You have to open the inside access door on the drivers side, remove the amp and wheel well cover, pinch the tabs and the bulb cluster will release. The taillight assembly is bolted from inside of the car, so it can't be done outside.

pull away the carpet from the inside corner of the boot(trunk) and you will see the lamp cluster,the bulbs are held in with clips.do not pull wires.....

On your 2006 Jetta there is a hinged "door" inside the trunk to allow access to the tail light assembly.
There are 2 black plastic tabs at the bottom of the assembly that you push up on and the whole assembly comes out. Note that this assembly is reinserted by putting the 2 small tabs at the top of the assembly back into the fixture first then rotating the bottom half down until it snaps into place. There are 2 bulbs (same part number) that are both the turn signal and brake light (both lights on for brake). Phillips P/N 12498 (21watt). Sylvania P/N 7506 (LL). They are $3.80 each at dealer.
