SOURCE: misfire in cylinder 3

I recently had that (po303) misfire in cyl. 3 on my 2002 Mazda MPV LX with the 6cyl. 3.0 ford duratec engine (the only engine installed that year). 75k miles. The engine was studdering while at idle and upon accelleration. It was worse when the AC was on. The check engine light came on. I went to Advanced Auto Parts. They loaned me a code reading handheld computer. An Actron OBD II. PO303 misfire in cyl.3 was the verdict. I then got on the internet to do some research. Found that the problem could be a number of things. Coil packs and/or wiring harness, spark plugs, egr valve and/or ports, fuel pump or filter, fuel injectors etc. etc.. I decided to try what I thought was the simpilist remedy first. I purchased new spark plugs, retrieved some tools from the garage and opened the hood. Though I've performed all the other routine maintenance items like oil changes, battery maintenance, air filter etc., I never really looked for or noticed the spark plugs or their location. The front bank of 3 plugs was a breeze to change out but the rear bank....well they havn't been changed yet. Not so simple. At that point I decided that since I would have to remove the intake manifold and all the wires, hoses and etc. would have to be unattached, I might as well change the 3 coil packs and recondition the 6 fuel injectors while I had it apart. The cost and hassle of those fixes then lead me back to do what my old school, auto mechanic all his life father, alway told me. "Look at the easy fixes first". Many of us think that since everything nowadays is so complex that the fix must be complex also. Well, I then purchased a bottle of Chevron Techron Fuel Injector Cleaner. So many other brands were on the shelf to choose from. Seafoam, Lucas, Shell, CRC, STP, etc., etc.. Through netsurfing I discovered an old CARTALK Q & A. They kinda gave a halfhearted nod to the Chevron product. It stuck with me so I tried it. Within 10 miles the engine began to run better. The more I drove the better the performance. The Check engine light went off. No more misfire in cyl. 3 and no more code po303.

SOURCE: 2000 CIVIC System too lean Cylinder 3 and 4 misfire Deteced

  1. P0171: This means that the oxygen sensor has detected a lean air-fuel ratio. This can be caused due to a vaccuum leak or a problem in the HO2S circuit or the HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) itself. (Bank one Sensor one). This is commonly located along the exhaust pipe. It could also be a bad Mass Air Flow sensor or a bad Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. Diagnostic checks will be needed to be carried out to be verified though
  2. Well as for the other codes, it means #3&4 cylinders are misfiring. It is a possibility that the P0171 code mite have caused the others to show up. I can be wrong though. But it is a strong possibility. If the air fuel mixtue is too lean indeed, mis-firing will occur, unless it is an actual electronic and not a mechnical problem. By the way, when these codes appear, how is the engine's performance. Does it remain the same or behaves poorly?

SOURCE: MISFIRING ON CYLINDER 1 VW POLO 1.4 3CYLINDER

I have changed a few cylinder heads under warranty for this type of problem. The exhaust valve guides wear, this causes the exhaust valve to seat badly, giving low compression. if one cylinder compresion reading is more than about 50 psi below the others, then this warrants head removal. It is quite a job, due to the fact that the camshft id chain driven. If you are up for it then once the head is removed, poor liquid into the exhaust ports and see if it leaks out through any of the exhaust valves.

Have changed all plugs and coil packs but still giting miss in 1 3 5 cil think its a short in wire hornins but cant find a diagram

If you are getting a misfire code on those three cylinders (all on just that one bank of engine!), it's probably not an electrical short, but something else causing misfire. Misfire codes are set when the power output from that cylinder is less than expected: the pcm senses a crankshaft lag in power output and sets the code.

Typically, misfires are caused by weak or missing spark, or by fuel/air mixture problems, or by low cylinder compression. The fact that your misfires are all on one bank (side) of the engine sounds suspiciously like the fuel/air mixture might be wrong for that bank, or the cylinder compression is low on that bank.

You could use a spark tester just to check spark on 1, 3, & 5. Use a calibrated spark tester to compare both banks-all 6 cylinders. I think you will see equal spark at all cylinders. The only shorts would be in the spark plug wires. And not likely all 3 went bad at once, although you could check them, maybe swap a few around and see if the misfire follows the wire.

Start looking for air or vacuum leaks that only affect bank 1. Possibly an intake manifold leak, could also be an exhaust leak, something that affects the air/fuel mixture in the bank 1 cylinders. Also you could do a compression test of the cylinders to make sure bank 1 is good, same compression as in bank 2 (the other side of engine). Just some tips to help you out, good luck.

I have problem :misfire cylinder #3 #5 about 3 years millage is 130000 ....thanks

It is possible that you may have two coil packs going bad as cylinders 3 and 5 are on different packs. To attempt to prove this without going broke, you could swap the 1/4 coil pack with one of the other two and see if the misfire changes the 1 or 4 cylinder instead. If it does, you have the issue resolved. See the diagram below for more details.

I have a 04 infiniti G35 I power wash the engine a few days ago. It started to misfire I replaced all spark plugs and the coil packs show to be not working. After all that it's still misfiring? ??

Most likely it's the wires, not the plugs or the coil packs. The plugs are supposed to be good for 100,000 miles. My 04 i35 has done near 100k miles on plugs, and it's really the same engine.
Get a set of plug wires and that should fix it for you.

Did the vehicle overheat?Feels like it runs on 3 cylinder this is a misfire underload, you are dealing with a misfire from the wires itself to the cap and rotor and even the sparkplug.

Cylinders 2 - 4 - 6 are facing the radiator. Cylinder 2 is closest to the drive belts.

Cylinders 1 - 3 - 5 are facing the firewall, cylinder one closest to the drive belts.
