SOURCE: The radio on my 2001 Kia says ''HOLD''

How long did you leave the battery on hooked. Radio codes are usually written in the owners manual by the dealership. Look in your owners manual in the radio section to see if it tells you anything about (HOLD).

Starter does not engage. Only clicks when I turn the key.

The first thing to do is to check the condition of the battery cables/terminals. Make sure they are clean, free from corrosion and are tight. Also check the black earth lead where it connects to the block/bodywork. A poor earth can cause the symptoms you describe.

If that doesn't work, disconnect the positive battery cable (but bear in mind that you may lose the radio code.. do you know your radio code?) and then disconnect, clean the cables on the starter motor.

If that does not do anything - suspect the starter motor solenoid. It can be removed and cleaned (remove the starter motor first). You can 'bridge' the terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver to try and start the car... but be careful.

I'm trying to start my 2005 kia sportage and it's not starting. There is no clicking or anything just silence. What is it? the battery, starter, alternator? About two weeks ago it was doing the same...

May be something as simple as corroded battery terminals or clamps.
Grab the battery cables and try to rotate both clamps a little.
If it then tries to start, then it is time to pick up a terminal/clamp cleaner from any parts store.

Remove the negative (black cable) first and clean both the clamp inside and the terminal outside, then reconnect- negative terminal last

It may be wise to buy also a small device which uses a 9V battery to connect from clamp to clamp (or plug into the lighter/power socket) unless you have the code available to regain access to any stereo you have; most go into a anti-theft 'safe' mode.

Replace alternator

It should not be too difficult to unbolt the alternator. Basically remove the drive belt, disconnect the battery. (it would save you some grief if you take a 9V battery and connect it to the battery terminals. This will be enough voltage to keep the computer memory and radio programming when you disconnect the car battery.) The 9V battery is a trick I use all the time.

How to replace battery in a zoostorm sl8

I recommend you get a 9v battery (like the one in a kids walkie talkie) rig it so you can connect it to the battery leads. this will keep the programming in the radio and computers alive momitarily while you remove the battery hold down and terminals.

How to reset cd players

When you disconnect your battery and then reconnect it again, it disables the radio/CD player. This is an anti-theft protection for your car radio.
The enable your radio the activation code is in your vehicle owner's manual. If you do not have this code you need to go to your Kia service centre and get them to enter this code for you.

I disconnected the battery on my 2005 kia sportage now it won't start

A mechanic would check for voltage at the battery cables (dirty?) the starter and the key switch. Also check the ground connections.

My radio says hold after we changed the battery. why?

the hold means you must put in the anti-theft code on the radio. To do that you must pull radio ,write down serial number of radio take that number to kia dealer, they can look it up and give you the code to get the radio working again.
