On all older vehicles with a carburetor there is an adjustment for high and low idle. Adjust the high idle so that it isn't so high

SOURCE: car over revving when stood

Try the gasket between the carburettor or the vacuum pipes may be pitted or holed, sounds like its letting air in causing the engine to rev.
Hope this helps.

Hi, I have a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Wagon, 4G93. It wont rev over 4000. It has no error codes, I changed the Mass Air Flow intake sensor and no change.

If your in park or neutral, the PCM stops the engine from revving up to high. If your driving, then the fuel filter is clogged up.

RE worded Hesitation issues on occasions tonight drove 15 miles stopped put in gas. Drove off got about 1000 yards engine just died had to cost to a space tried to start cranks but wont run?

Do basic testing. When in failed mode, check for spark. I suspect ignition module or coil, as these parts fail when hot and when you turn off running engine it gets hotter before it cools. Hard to diagnose because when you remove module to test, by the time you get to a parts store to test it's really cool again. Make them run test three times and tap with a pencil as you test.

Revving engine

This is normally caused by a cracked head or failed injector seating washer allowing fuel into the sump. The oily fuel then keeps the engine running. Does the engine oil smell of diesel?

You may have a broken engine mount. As the engine revs and torques it can pull the throttle cable in such a way as to continue reving. Check for smooth operation of the throttle and cable with the engine off. I f you have smooth operation, check your motor mounts.

Car wont move after warmed up

Stuck in snow, if you spin the tires for a prolonged amount of time you can overheat the transmission and damage it internally. Without seeing it, my best guess is that's what happened!
