The SRS light comes on when there is a fault detected with your seat belts. You will need to scan the SRS system to get the trouble codes. you will need a high end scan tool for this. Once you know the codes you will have a much better idea of what to do next.
I checked on the recall list and there are several listed. Your best option is to call your Honda dealer and ask them if there are any open recalls on your Civic. They will need your vehicle identification number (VIN). If the reason your SRS light is on and it is related to the recall you may be lucky.
The most likely possibility is the connector for the airbag is
not on securely. Check the connector first. But if the connector is connected
properly then you will have to get the
error codes to locate the exact problem for SRS light ON. There is a way to
pull the codes from the SRS control unit without a scan tool. 1.Turn the ignition switch OFF , and wait for ten seconds. Then
connect the SCS service connector to the service check connector (2P). If you
do not wait ten seconds, the SRS unit will not be completely reset and will not
output DTCs. 2.Turn the ignition switch ON (II). The SRS indicator light comes
on for about six seconds and goes off. Then it will indicate the DTC: ·The DTC consists of
a main code and a sub-code. ·Including the most
recent problem, up to three different malfunctions can be indicated. ·In case of a
continuous failure, the DTC will be indicated repeatedly. ·In case of an
intermittent failure, the SRS indicator light will indicate the DTC one time, and
then it will stay on. ·If both a continuous
and an intermittent failure occur, both DTCs will be indicated as continuous
failures. ·In case the system
is normal (no DTC), the SRS indicator light will stay on. 3.Read the DTC. 4.Turn the ignition switch OFF, and wait for ten seconds. Then
disconnect the SCS service connector from the service check connector (2P). The SCS Service Tool is nothing more than a
jumper wire. Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.
Try his from someone that had the same problem...
"I have the same SRS light problem. Comes on when I start the car and stays on the whole time. I called American Honda (1-800-999-1009) and gave them my VIN number. Apparently there is a warranty extension: 10 yrs or 157,500 miles, whichever comes first on the OPDS (occupant position detector sensor) unit or OPDS sensor which can cause the SRS light to come on. Going to take it to a Honda dealer next week. If that is the problem then it will be fixed for free. If not I have to pay for the diagnosis fee which is about $100 and then however much it cost to fix the problem."
I'm having the same problem, my SRS light is on too. Just so you know, I just got a thing in the
mail from Honda for my 2001 Honda Civic DX Sedan for a recall on the
airbag system (SRS is part of the same system as airbags, I think). Hope
this gives you a bit more info!!
does the srs light come on and go off at random times and sometimes stay on if that is so check the srs switch under your seat it try moving round in the seat applying weight in diff locations and see if it goes off and on if so then you might need to replace that switch
The SRS light refers to your airbags. You can try reseting the light by going to the webpage that I will give you. If it comes back on after you reset it then there is a problem with your SRS system and you will need to have it diagnosed as your airbags will not function when the light is on. Here is the website:
