Ticking noise in a 2001 Monte Carlos.

When my friend's turn on his 2001 Monte Carlos and starts to accelerate there is a ticking noise. It seems like it only happens when it is cold. Where should I look first? I am hoping it's not the motor but I dont know where else it would be coming from and why the cold affects it? Any suggestions for him?

Probably a valve lifter. Try a cup of transmission fluid in the crankcase, or most parts stores have stuff to put in for that.

Ticking sounds like a dry lifter, when was the last time you changed the oil and filter? Humming sounds like you need a tire rotation because of uneven tire wear.

There is a ticking noise when moving

The ticking noise could be coming from a CV joint. Does the ticking noise go away in reverse? A loose brake pad (Anti rattle clip missing or broken) will move back and forth in it's mounting, a warped rotor will enhance this effect, the ticking noise will come when the pads moves upward into it's mounting causing a metal on metal tick.
Does the ticking noise get louder when you are turning the vehicle? If it does this would indicate a worn CV joint.

When i turn key, dash starts blinking, ticking noise, car does nothing. 2001 saturn sl

You have a dead battery or a loose battery terminal. Have a friend put some cables on your battery from their car and see if it starts.

2001 Buick Century Ticking Noise

Okay, lets hope it is something simple. Remove the underhood light bulb. At night, in the dark, start the engine and look under the hood. You may be able to see sparks jumping. This would be bad wires. If you can see where the spark plugs go and one has a spark jumping it is just one bad sparkplug. Turn off car-replace underhood bulb.
If you see no sparks then it is most likely the valve train. If you have adjustable lifters they need someone to tighten them up to specifications. If they are not adjustable you may need to replace worn parts.
Make sure you keep fresh and plenty of oil in the engine. It can not repair worn parts but if the oil is low or dirty you will have bigger problems.

Locate the ticking noise. It is a relay that has gone bad.

Engine Knocking/Ticking

This may not be your problem, but recently we had chevy in with a ticking on acceleration that turned out to be a leak on the right hand exhaust manifold only slight but enough to make a noise when driven hard. we noticed a carbon mark around the second cylinder in. If it is a petrol engine have you checked the spark plugs are correctly torqued?

Ticking noise

A small exhaust leak can sound like a ticking noise during acceleration and can get better or worse as the system heats up. I had a similar problem when the engine was cold that was solved with a new exhaust manifold gasket.
