2001 VW passat driver's side headlight keeps going out

So about a month ago i noticed my driver's side headlight was out. i went to the store, bought a new one and changed it just like I did for the passenger's side headlight a year ago. I noticed that now the driver's side headlight is out again! I pulled up to my destination and tapped on the light a couple of times and nothing. When I left about two hours later the light was on again and I feel a sense of relief. But guess what? next night the light is off again!!!

This is obviously an electrical problem which VW is known for. Someone told me it might be this specific wire that probably needs to be replaced and could run me about $1,000. I'm sure the solution wont be anything other then taking it in and getting the wire replaced but I was hoping someone might have some more information on this like which wire it is specifically so I can see how much it goes for before I'm ripped off, or hopefully an easy fix solution although im pretty sure that just isn't in the cards. Thanks!!!

I had a similar problem. My driver side headlight went out, then a few days late it was back on again. Then when it went out again, I smacked the side of the car and the light came back on. I removed the headlight assembly and found that the wire socket where the bulb plug was insterted seemed to be loose. I crimped down on the socket to make the connection tighter. I haven't had any problems since (about a month now).

Try inspecting the wires, socket, and bulb for defects. Try a wiggle test on the wires to that lamp. See if there is any effect. If nothing inspect the socket for hot spots and/or corrosion.

I had the same exact problem..... the wiring was basically falling apart and the plastic coating (covering) over each individual wire was deteriorated and falling apart. I simply put some heavy duty silicone over each individual wire. let it dry fully, put a new bulb in, and voila it worked like a charm.
Do be aware, though, that if you touch the bulbs with your bare fingertips and the oil from your fingers gets on the surface of the bulb, when the bulb gets hot it WILL mess it up. ALWAYS handle those bulbs with a clean dry rag or something similar (paper towel, napkin, etc).... My mechanic told me this and I didn't believe him... I found out the hard way (three bulbs later at 18$ each!!!).

SOURCE: 2001 VW passat driver's side headlight keeps going out

What is going on is the Day time running light are causing the bulbs to run when ever the car is on. Day or night. I disabled mine and have not lost a head light in 2 years.

Here's an article on disabling the DTR. The relay you are looking to pull in on the firewall be the break pedal.

You are looking for the 173 relay.

Hope this helps.

Passenger door does not lock. It stays unlocked unless I manually push it in.

Most likely your doorlock acuator it the problem. When this lock started to exhibit the symptoms did you notice if it was moving up or down slower than usual or making any strange noises?

Yes it could be the wheel bearing. After stopping, see if the wheel itself is hot to the touch (like burn your hand hot) if so, take it to the shop right away...unless you plan to change out the wheel bearings yourself.

No.  Go to another shop, and don't return to this place if ALL they told you was the boot was broken. Sounds like you know about as much as the shop you went to ... you wouldn't want to pay you to work on your car, right?
If they had said a tie rod end was bad, you could go back, but based on your description of what they told you, I  wouldn't let them fix a flat.
You have a 2001 Passat, and at that age ALL front wheel cars will need new CV boots.  The front outer CV boots are probably both broken and need to be replaced, but this has nothing to do with the pulling.   If you ignore the boots, you will be buying 2 rebuilt axles or 2 new CVs in the next year or two.
You need to find a reliable shop in your area that work on VWs or Audis (essentially the same thing).  Many shops will not touch VWs.  Check for a VW club in the area and ask around. If you are going to keep this car, any time consuming research you do to find an honest VW mechanic will pay off.

You need to go to an QUALIFIED alignment shop and ask for a 4 wheel alignment. This shop should do only alignment, NOT be a tire store.   If they are competent, they will notice any suspension problems and tell you what to get fixed before they can align it.  Make sure that they think that alignment will resolve your problem, and get them to agree if it doesn't, they will align it for free in the next month or so, when you get the front suspension fixed.
One of two things are causing the pulling
1. First when you lent your car to your college buddy last year,  he hit a pothole or a curb or something so hard as to knock the suspension out of alignment.  Or possibly the alignment is out fo other reasons.
2.Some suspension part was worn out,  check with the VW dealer for recall notices on either upper or lower control arms, (98 Passat had recall on one of these).

If the coolant temperature sensor is of the 4 wire type then these are a common failure on VW's.
