I have a 2004 silverado 1500 and have clunking in rear end and was told I have excessive back lash in ring and pinion gears how do I fix that and how much would it cost?

suggest that you talk with a diff reconditioning specialist center
if you have excessive pinion to ring gear clearance the diff will be making terrible noises not a clunk
what you have is worn side gear washers in the diff carrier and that is not essential to repair unless you get diff noise on turning corners
All diffs have play in the diffs that most people say is pinion /ring gear problems when it is not
the clunk noise comes from engaging a gear and the diff housing reacts to the load ( radius rod bushes , stabilizer bar bushes etc), the side gears take up the clearance, and the
"U " joints or cv joints take any wear
Best advice is--- if all you have is a clunk ( check everything outside the diff first) and the diff runs quiet under acceleration or deceleration, DON'T fix what ain't broken

Clunking and whinning when locked in awd

check the cv joints for wear. check rear drive shaft for worn slip joint splines and "u" joint wear. When you lock in awd there is no centre diff to allow the variations between the wheels and so you are experiencing a torque build up between the front and rear diffs . This put stress on the entire drive chain so any looseness or worn parts will display noises. Remember that the awd lock should be only used on surfaces that allow the tyres to slip and relieve the stress ( dirt road---snow---mud--ice )

My ZJ hopps and rear end clunks and skips when flooring it

Hi Simon, Check the suspension mounts and those for the diff. Also have a look at the UJ's on the propeller shaft. I believe you'll find the problem will be there. Regards John

I just took my parents T100, 1998 in for servicing. It had been sitting for about 2 years so we had them replace fluids and do a 90,000 mile check up. They charged us for 17 qts of NPN75W90 gear oil. ...

according to mitchell ( a known source for autmotive info)

the rear diff takes 3.1 qts
the front diff takes 2.0qts
the transmission takes 2.3 qts
the transfer case takes 1.2 qts
giving a total of 8.6 qts
however many times these numbers are not 100% and vehicles do take more
i would say the truck takes around 12 qts for all those services and if they did put all that fuid in there they may have done something wrong

My honda crv has rattles when driving. Since Oct./10 I have put struts, strut mounts, brakes, rotors on rear, stablizer link kits on rear and front, still havent fixed it. also have a vibration on front...

If it's an AWD model, check the rear differential to body mount bushings on top of the rear diff. And get your tires rotated and balanced.

TR6 Clunking

Does it go away or change when you depress the clutch. If so you will need to inspect the clutch pressure plate and bearing. You may need to remove trans. You may have a loose bolt on the flywheel that backed off a little.

1997 town&counrty AWD has a clunk when backing

The drive train could be binding up when hard turns are done. its common on AWD vehicles, but there should not be any clunking or noises. its possible you have worn rear drive shaft joints? i dont think it would be the half shafts due to the dont turn. or mover up and down that much. the drive shaft to the rear diff would have more stress.

I would have a garage check it out ASAP. cause you would need someone under there to check. i dont suggest doing that in your driveway for saftey reasons. hopefully its something thats not too expensive.
