Replace the speed sensor on the trans that will cause exactly what you describe is happening.

SOURCE: Maybe a transmission problem?

If you're only in "D", you should switch to "OD" when driving at higher speeds. "D" only allows you to move up to third gear whereas "OD" will move you into fourth. You're over-working your transmission by driving in "D".

is rpm at 4 means rpm at 4000. if so assuming everything is okey in the transmission. check your Vehicle Speed Sensor it looks like your not getting the signal which tells you computer to shift at overdrive when speed is over 50mph.

there is a computer that controls your rpm gauge, your speedo, and your shift. check that and your speed sensor. the sensor is faster and easier.

these are known to have this type of problem when the transmission is in need of rebuilding this gets worse as the wheather gets colder, while at the time checking the sensors.you can also have the codes checked to see if there is a code for the transmission.not sure when gm started this but when there is a tranny problem of some kind they go into limp in mode which could be what`s happening as well but i think you maybe looking at a rebuild

My 98 mercury mystique is missing 3rd gear it goes 1st and 2nd fine but wont go over 30mph and no matter how high the rpm go it wont turn over into 3rd gear Help

The likely problem is the VSS or vehicle speed sensor. The transmission uses the speed from the speed sensor to determine the shift points. You should have the check engine light on it will probably show a code for the speed sensor. Hope this helps!

Will not move from 2nd gear help PLEASE?

Your transmission is in a "limp in" mode. There are 2 sensors that need replaced. Total cost should be less than $100. I had it happen to me on my 99 300m. The sensors limit the speed to about 25 mph and the RPM rev's high. Just get the sensors replaced.
